Author Jean Long.KIldimo signing a copy of her book for neighbour Indu Chaudri Carheeny
The Georgian house at No 2 Pery Square hosted the book launch of Jean Long of Carheeny on Thursday, September 9. A representative of Dyslexia Ireland was on hand to outline the difficulties encountered by those with the condition. This same lady was well qualified to speak on the subject as her own children had dealt with dyslexia (difficulty with reading) on their way to successful careers and full employment. Writing presents a huge burden and much tribute was paid to Jean for successfully surmounting the obstacle on the way to publishing her book, ‘A Right Brain Mind in a Left Brain World’. Activity in the right brain is predominant with people with dyslexia and it is this that ensures a greater than usual artistic and technical ability with such persons. Dyslexia is not a simple condition to understand like colour blindness. Each person’s condition is specific to them and may be compounded with Numerlexia- which makes dealing with shopping very difficult, or with Visual Spatial Difficulties- where shapes and distances between objects are problematic. Tribute was also paid to Jean by the Limerick Mayor, Maria Byrnes who was happy to attend the occasion. Jean’s parents Michael and Patricia O’Brien were also on hand to witness the launching and Michael had surely influenced his daughter in her poetry, as he is also a poet. In the author’s ‘Acknowledgements’ in her book she mentions a long list of persons who have graced her life and in so doing she demonstrates her penchant for making friends and generously allowing others into her life. The book is available in O’Mahony’s following her book signing on Saturday last September 11.
RUMMAGE FOR CHARITY
The organisers of the fundraising event for feeding the poor of Zwelishe in the Western Cape of South Africa wish to communicate their thanks to all those who supported the ‘Rummage Sale’ on Sunday, September 12. All the profits from the event will go directly to fill the ‘Bags of Love’, that is the bags of food that are circulated each Christmas to feed the impoverished citizens of that township. The bags are filled by members of the St. Vincent de Paul Society locally and consist of basic food items, very unlike the food items we associate with Christmas celebration. Last year the numbers who benefited were 1,500 and this year it is aimed to increase the numbers of food bags to 2,000. Profits from the Under 12 Soccer Club Blitz, which was held at the same time as the Rummage Sale, will also be channelled towards that same worthy cause. The trophy for the Blitz is the Maire Kennedy-Crank Perpetual which keeps alive t he memory of one who dedicated much of her life towards promoting the causes of the less fortunate and fittingly her family are still engaged in similar Christian enterprises. Further information may be gained on the above feeding scheme from Bernadette or Tony at 061 393637.

UP TIPP!
Local Kilkenny hurling followers were the first to congratulate their Tipperary neighbours whose county were worthy victors of the All Ireland. They are no strangers to defeat themselves, which they embrace as humbly as they do winning. They think it wonderful that Tipperary can now boast ‘one in a row’.
