ARI Board Members L to R Mary Daly,Multifarnham & Phyllis O'Halloran,Kildimo at Annual Conference of Active Retirement Ireland in Killarney April 2011
COMHBHRÓN: The death has occurred of Ann Finnin, nee Cloran, of No 2 Church Street, King’s Island. The late Ann is sister-in-law to Joan Hayes of Mellon and Brenda McMahon of Ballynacarriga. She is also survived by her husband Martin, her daughters and son and extended families. Her Requiem Mass was celebrated in St. Mary’s Church on Wednesday, April 20 with internment in Castlemungret Cemetery afterwards. May she rest in peace.
TIDY TOWNS: Members of the local group gave up their private pursuits recently to gather the rubbish of others who regard the Bog Road as the place to dump their unwanted televisions, fridges and household rubbish. On Wednesday and Thursday of last week they braved inclement weather and in the process gathered forty bags of waste. This was deposited by people who were probably going on to pass by the Recycling Centre in Mungret, where a car full of material may be deposited for a mere €5. The County Council is actively pursuing illegal dumpers at local locations and heavy penalties will follow identification of these environmental miscreants. The civic-minded members of the Tidy Towns committee, who regularly work for the good of others in creating a better environment for all, would gladly welcome others of like mind who are willing to lighten the burden of the few. They may be contacted on 061 394940 if you require litter pickers, bags or gloves to help the cause. The Recycling Centre in Mungret will offer advice on their recycling facilities on 087 7489130.
COMMUNITY LOTTO JACKPOT €8,300 AND RISING: The Lotto draw on April 12, was for a prize of €8,300 and no punter predicted the winning combination of 1, 4, 16 & 22. In consequence, ‘Lucky Dips’ of €20 each were drawn by Martin O’Dea, Ferrybridge; Peter McCormack, Kildimo; Margaret O’Reilly, Ferrybridge; Kathleen Coughlan, Court and Shirley Fitzgerald, Ballynacarriga. When you next visit the ‘The Seven Sisters’, Post Office, ‘De Bucket’, Slattery’s or the Dromore Inn, be sure to fill in your lucky numbers where a minimum investment of €2 could cover your holiday costs.
EPISCOPAL QUALITY: His many friends and admirers in his native village had no doubt about casting the Canon in a higher calling! Father John O’Shea has been recognised by his parishioners and especially the producer of ‘The Bishop’s Candlesticks’, which is based on the work of French writer Victor Hugo, as having that episcopal quality. Given the plenitude of the Canon’s ministerial gifts, it comes as no surprise that he could carry off this stage performance with aplomb and with the dignity demanded of the position. Time was in Church affairs when the promptings of the people could secure elevation to higher office. Is this an intimation of things to come? There is a rumour that a secret emissary from the Vatican was seen in Abbeyfeale over the weekend of the Glórach theatre’s presentations with a view to assessing the Canon’s performance for a permanent position in the role.
BANTRACHT NA TUAITHE: Kildimo members were saddened to hear of the death of Mary Meaney, Roxboro and Drombanna ICA. Mary, who was well known in ICA circles for her expertise in crafts was also one of the VCO’s to guilds including Kildimo, which she visited on many occasions. Condolences are extended to her sons, their spouses, grandchildren and extended family on her passing. May she rest in peace.KENRY HISTORY SOCIETY: Br. John Feaheney of Ballysteen and Cork will lead an interested party of history enthusiasts around his native Ballysteen on Sunday, May 15 2011. The party will meet outside the Church in Ballysteen at 3.00 pm.
COPSWOOD GAELS RFC: Estuary RFC hosted an invitational blitz which proved very enjoyable with our team beating Estuary 20 to nil and beating Listowel 25 to nil. Against UL Bohs the teams drew on five all which brought both teams together in the Shield Final. The score might suggest an easy match for UL but that was far from the truth. The first half was played at a blistering pace with some serious back row play from both teams with equally serious defensive play. There was no quarter given in this match and our lads proved equal to the task. The forwards were lead by inspirational captain Daniel Pearse and he led his pack of Tommy Hartigan, Shane Moloney, Shaun Barry, David Moloney and Jack Mullane as worthy leader. Once the ball moved out wide then our back line of Aaron Corbett, Liam O'Sullivan, Mark Curran and Padraic Hartigan stood up to the test with body on the line tackling which any professional would have been proud of. At half time the nil all scoreline showed the commitment of our lads and only two hard fought tries in the last two minutes of the game saw UL over the line. Others to perform on the day were Tadgh O'Shaughnessy, Jamie Doupe, Jack O'Halloran/Hannifin, Thomas Kelly/Kiely, Colin Griffin, Jonathon Power and Aaron O'Donovan. A special thanks To Estuary RFC for a very well planned event and welcome beverages and sandwiches.
