COMMUNITY EVENTS:
Make a note of Friday September 2 for the Community Council Barbeque.  This is a major fundraiser for the important work of the local council and your support as always is most valuable.  There will be a limited amount of tickets available at €10 each, which will entitle you to gourmet food and musical entertainment at the patio bar of ‘De Bucket’ Pub, Ferrybridge.

PLATFORM DANCING:
Remember Guerin’s platform at Curragh Chase?  Many seniors have good reason to recall the happy evenings at Curragh Cross where the ‘platform of romance’ led to enduring relationships and family dynasties that endure to this day.  This all came to an end in the middle of the last century, when ballrooms were being built and country musicians were replaced by slick-suited show bands.  However, all of these early days will be recalled on Sunday September 11, at 3.00 at the old venue outside the gates.  Members of Kilcornan community are busy planning a day of memories of the family who lived nearby and who organised the ‘penny dances’.  It was not unknown at the time that substitutes for the penny in the form of washers or other metal objects might be dropped into Guerin’s cap in order to secure a free dance.  There will be no clerical opposition to this upcoming event as was the case when the Parish Priest of Stonehall, beat the ditches for courting couples.  As one Kildimo resident recalls, “He spoiled many a good night”.  Such memories will be recounted on September 11 as the history of platform dancing at that venue will be delivered by local man Michael Costello.  The O’Connell family who did restorative work on the area will unveil the commemorative stone to the Guerin family and local musicians will lead the dancers in an afternoon of reminiscence and fun.

A total of 34 institutions in both the public and private sector will offer programmes ranging from Certificate to Masters Level.   Potential students can online though Bluebrick.ie. Subject to eligibility for these courses, participants will not have to pay fees. Applications for most courses close on or around August 31st.

MEASLES IMMUNISATION:
The HSE National Immunisation Office is urging parents to make sure that their children are fully vaccinated against measles following a large pan national outbreak of the disease in Europe. Measles is a highly infectious and dangerous illness which spreads very easily, particularly in homes, crèches, playgroups, camps, schools and universities.  So far, 110 cases of measles have been reported in Ireland since January 2011.  Parents should speak with their GP and get the vaccine for their child if needed. The vaccine is free.
