KILDIMO COMMUNITY NOTES W/E September 24 2011

COMHBHRÓN:  The funeral took place on Saturday, September 17 2011 of Mary Gallagher, nee Monckton, of Kilmoreen, Kildimo.  Mary remained active until very recently and she had reached her ninety-fourth year.  She was predeceased by her husband Stephen and is survived by her sons Gerard, Vincent, Seamus and Brendan and daughters Hannie Kenneanny, Kilcolman and Margaret Hoffman, by her son-in-law, daughter-in-law, her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews, cousin relatives and friends. 
The sad news of the untimely death of John Watts, Ballynacarriga came as a shock to the local community on Monday morning, September 19.  He was removed from Downey’s Funeral Home Pallaskenry to the local church on Tuesday, September 20 and interred following Requiem Mass the following day in St. Mary’s Church ,Pallaskenry to Kilcornan graveyard.  Sympathy is extended to his brother Davy and his other relations and friends. RIP

BANTRACHT NA TUAITHE: Best of luck is extended to the Federation Pitch and Putt team and their mentor Sports Officer Kathleen Griffin as they compete in National ICA finals next week-end at An Grianán.
After the competition  the members might like to avail of some pampering in the new beauty parlour at An Grianán.This is a recent development in the basement of the main house and one which no doubt will be enjoyed by many ladies when they visit there. The list of treatments available include  Indian Head Massage, Aromatherapy , Facials and many more. Just make your appointment, sit back and enjoy the pampering.


CULTURE NIGHT:  September is the month usually designated for celebrating national and local culture.  A meeting will be held in the Library on Thursday September 29 at 8.00 of those interested in presenting Kildimo’s cultural heritage- mainly of the written word whether in song or story.  Local writers of prose or poetry will be especially sought to present their works at a night during October.   
GUERIN’S PLATFORM:  The hundreds of persons, who enjoyed the recent commemoration of Guerin’s Platform dancing at Curragh Chase crossroads, will be interested in the forthcoming TG4 feature on the event.  This takes place ‘As Gaeilge’ on the channel’s news programme on Sunday  September 25, at 7.00 pm.
ZWELISHE SAYS ‘THANKS’:  The friends of Zwelishle in the Western Cape of South Africa wish  to convey  their thanks to all who supported their recent fundraiser in Kilcornan Community Centre.  Among the initiatives to help the feeding programme for this impoverished township, the efforts of Kilcornan parish stand out as the most outstanding.  Upwards of €2,500 were raised in the recent effort and this will provide a nutritious supply of food for 250 families over the coming Christmas period.  The organisers on the ground are aiming to extend their largesse to feed 2,000 families this year, all of which is co-ordinated by the local St. Vincent de Paul.   The local organisers, Bernadette and Tony Hackett, will personally deliver the local proceeds directly and it is never too late to contribute to this worthy cause to 061 393637.  A mass is being celebrated in St. John the Baptist Church for the intentions of the local community. 

SPECIAL NEEDS IN EDUCATION INFORMATION EVENING:  Those wishing to learn how to access services for those with Learning Difficulties and Special Educational Needs are invited to drop in to an information evening that will take place in the Newcastle West Community Centre, on Thursday October 6, from 2-8pm.  Featuring a Range of locally based services & voluntary support groups, it is open to parents, guardians, teachers & students who have special educational needs. KENRY HISTORICAL SOCIETY:  Would you like to know more about our local involvement in the Irish ‘War of Independence’.  Many locals were involved, some paying the price of imprisonment for their bravery.  Tom Toomey has drawn from local sources, such as prison camp diaries and he will present his vast knowledge of this episode in our history at the ‘Kenry History Society’ meeting on Wednesday, September 29.  The venue is Pallaskenry Community Centre, starting at 8.00 pm.   Bí Linn!


YOGA CLASSES:  There’s a free open night by Helena to introduce you to this well-tried and tested discipline at ‘The Seven Sisters’ on Wednesday, September 21 at 7pm.  Subsequently the course will run each Wednesday night for six nights from 7 – 8.  Joanne will supply any details


COMMUNITY LOTTO:  The draw on September 13 produced numbers 2, 3, 4 & 21 as the winning combination for a Jackpot of € 9,400.  No member predicted this sequence and in consequence Lucky Dips of €20 each were drawn by Mary Bourke, Knockroe; Michael Coughlan, Court; John Meade, Old Kildimo; Tríona, Luke & Gerry, Ballynacarriga & S. Warner, Coolbeg.  You can now have three shots at the Jackpot for €5 at any of the ticket sales venues or from a member of the Community Council


COPSWOOD GAELS RUGBY:  The new season has begun with a fresh influx of boys and girls who train every Sunday from 10 am to 11 am at Copswood, under newly approved coaches Ollie O’Regan, Paul Harrison, Shane Hannan, Maura Murphy and Eamonn Ward.  


COMMITTEE SKILLS TRAINING:  An opportunity for committees to upgrade their working skills is offered by Suzanne Rowley of WLR, 069 79114. This pilot scheme is aimed at promoting best practice and good governance for Community Groups in West Limerick and is limited to eight groups.  The course begins on September 27, will continue for four weeks at two and a half hours nightly.  If interested contact West Limerick Resources at 069 66298.

COMPUTER TRAINING:  If you are receiving Social Welfare payments, you are invited to participate in Basic Computer Training at a venue in Patrickswell.  This begins soon and will be conducted by volunteer tutors for an hour and a half a week.  If interested contact West Limerick Resources at 069 66298.
 
BLOOD DONATION:  Askeaton Community Centre will host a Blood Donation Clinic on Wednesday, September 28, from 6.00 – 9.00 pm.  Only 3% of the population donate blood, but the need for blood is of much greater proportions.  Correct this imbalance, it won’t kill you. 

BOXERCISE CLASSES:  You are invited to join boxercise classes which are being held every Wednesday night 7-8pm in  Mungret GAA hall . All are

NUTRITIONAL TALK:  Darren O’Shea and Eoin O’Brien are hosting a talk powered by Juice plus at the Seven Sisters on Friday, September 23, from 8.00 – 9.00 pm.  All welcome and details from the hosts. 

KNOCKFIERNA HISTORICAL SOCIETY:  Following the recent success of the Kilkenny hurlers, the society is taking a trip to the hurling capital on Saturday, October 1, stopping in Callan en route, leaving at 7.30 am.   Anyone wishing to travel on this trip please contact Pat O’Donovan, Newcastlewest 087 9977340, Marion Hanley, Ballingarry 087 9741389, Eileen Cronin, Kilfinny, Adare 087 7839743.  Host for the day will be Philip Lynch, historian from Co.
