ALLOTMENTS

The new interest in self-sufficiency and the availability of Allotments prompted a visit to the ‘Open-Day’ on the family farm of John Hassett under the southern slopes of Slieve Felim, near Murroe. This is a prime location with wide southern vistas to the Ballyhouras and Galtees, which holders may enjoy during their breaks from digging. Already much of the backbreaking work is done by John and his partner Marie and their own allotment nearby provides a good example and stimulus to those new to the land who are purchasing leases on his farm. The backdrop of Slieve Felim provides a welcome shelter from northern winds and traditionally orchards were productive in this location and will be in the future when John gets around to planting. The Hassett family go back several hundred years in the locality and are equally deeply rooted in the rich soil of Ballyvorheen, Murroe

LIMERICK CITY ART GALLERY

The annual extravaganza of contemporary art is running at the Pery Square gallery until May 24. Even if it is the sudden onset of an April shower that sends you there, you are sure to be affected and maybe baffled by what is on show. This exhibition also overflows into many other city locations. My particular favourite was the video installation of a man walking around in circles but if you live in Kildimo north, you’ll see lots of people doing the same around Ballynacarriga boreen.

SENIOR COLLEGE OPEN DAY

Learning is free at Senior College and to learn all about that the College is hosting a ‘Coffee Morning’ on Tuesday, April 28, from 11am to 1pm. Amongst the diverse range of courses on offer there are many related to Childcare and the medical area. If your bent is entrepreneurial, every aspect of business is deal with. Art and the fashion industry is well catered for, but if your attraction is for hair extensions and dealing with split ends, this is the place for you. WALKING CLINICS

Perhaps you daily walk is not resulting in the desired effects. If not, then you need to attend the ‘Fit Walk Clinics’ that are being organised by Co. Limerick Sports Partnership. The aim of these events, which are being held in NCW and Kilmallock on April 20 and 27, is to demonstrate how to get the most from you perambulations. A big take up from the women who walk in Mellon and Ballynacarriga is anticipated.
