its inhabitants from earliest times to the present. Liam, whose family settled in the area

in 1642 explained the complex inter-relationships between the resident families on the

Island and their subsequent history. Many of his audience were also connected with the

Island and islanders, resulting in an animated discussion of living history. Photos of local

family members are avidly collected by Liam and some of these showed visitors of the past

including the famed traditional Galway singer Máire Ní Scolaí and her husband Professor

Liam O Buachalla along with his friend Eamon De Valera. A short walk following the talk

was conducted around the remains of the site of the Castle near where an archaeological

dig was conducted prior to the building of the plant during which many burials from the

Middle Ages were uncovered outside the Bawn wall of the Castle. The results of this outing

elicited many promises on the part of the visitors to return again to spend more time in this

interesting environment with hopes to view the rare orchids that appear in late May.

Kildimo/Pallaskenry Community Games

Art Competition. Despite a very windy and wet morning the boys and girls

from this area made their way to Ballybrown for the County round of the

Art Competition last Saturday. The children ranged in ages from 7 years to

12 years and the art work produced on the day was of a very high standard

covering many community games activities. The judges will have their work cut

out finding the winners. Results will be issued in a few weeks time. Well done

to all who took part.

Talent Competition. Pallaskenry Communtiy Centre was alive with talent

on Saturday evening when the local talent competition took place. There

was no shortage of entries with over forty arts taking to the stage on the

night. The audience was treated to musicians playing a wide a varied array

of musical instruments, children giving river dance a run for its money with

many great dancers ,the singers were in fine voice and keeping in tune. We

even got treated to an act from the wonderful story The Secret Garden. We

had beautiful recitations that brought smiles to the faces of the audience. All

the children showed great confidence in their performance and should be

very proud of their achievements. We wish to thank Fiona Linnane, Shuna

Nunan for judging the competition. Stephan Kaiser took charge of sound on

the night and did a great job. Master of ceremonies for the night was Joanne

McGuinness and she kept the event flowing. This event would not be possible

without the support of our local national schools and the parents of the

children. We thank everyone who made this event possible. We had many

medal winners on the night and those placed in first and second place will now

go forward to represent this area at the next round of the competition. We

wish them the very best of luck.

RETIRED:  Local neighbours and friends of Church of Ireland Minister, George Cliffe, will be interested to know that following his many years of ministry, he is finally hanging up his soutane and relegating his collar to the top of his wardrobe.  His final area of ministry encompassed at least parts of the three counties of Kilkenny, Tipperary and Waterford, while domiciled in Piltown, Co. Kilkenny.  George forged close relationships with all the citizens of his adopted area and has been a powerful influence for unity among believers and non-believers alike.  A public evening of celebration was held in Piltown (“The Model Village”) on Thursday October 10, to mark his retirement and the high esteem in which he was held locally.  Ad Multos Annos.

GAA AUTUMN NEWSLETTER:  If you haven’t received a copy of this record of activities, any of the officers will supply you with one.  The amalgamation of Pallaskenry and Kildimo clubs is guided by Chairman Eamon Enright, Secretary Daniel O’Sullivan and Treasurer Liam Hayes and their committee members.  The 2013 ‘Newsletter’ paints a healthy state of the club with much activity at all levels and a Clubhouse equal to any other rural club.  Success on the pitch is reflected in the choice of several players for County Teams.  Naturally finance is an important part of the success of the club and fundraising activities are central to this.  The Lotto draw continues weekly and there is a drive to further increase members for this.  If a Table Quiz would take your fancy, then the Beer Garden/Dromore Inn is the venue for one on Friday October 26.  The AGM takes place at the Club House on Thursday November 29 when your support and attendance would be welcome.

KILDIMO COMMUNITY COUNCIL:  The AGM of the local community council was held on Wednesday October 2 in the Library.  The community response to this important meeting did not do justice to the officers and members who have been endeavouring to maintain and develop our village and its environs.  The Chairman Tom Griffin, Hon Secretary Mary Conway and Treasurer Eddie Lunn read their reports, all of which were positive and indicative of the work they have been putting into their tasks.  Progress on the final planning permission for the community centre continue to hold up that development but constant meetings  take place between the local council members and the officers of Limerick Co Co to address these problem areas.  The development of the Library and the provision of facilities including digital projector and laptops are well underway with finances for same secured.  Dermot Mullane and Cathy O’Sullivan who share the duties of PRO and Youth Club Leaders reported on the healthy state of the latter club while always seeking help from the parents whose children enjoy their efforts.

PALLASKENRY PLAYGROUND:  Fundraising for this worthy project continues with a ‘Bingo Night’ on Monday October 21 at 8.00 pm.  You could “Check” a prize of €400 or win a Raffle for an overnight in a five star hotel in Killarney.  Refreshments will be served.

MOTOR NEURONE DISEASE:  A fundraiser for the Irish branch of this group will be held in ‘De Bucket’ on September 6 at 8.00.  This is in memory of local lady Joan O’Mahony who died last year in England as a result of contracting the disease.  Pa & Steve will supply the music during the barbeque which will include a raffle on the night.

GUERIN’S PLATFORM DANCING:  Another great day’s dancing was enjoyed in the sun on Sunday September 1.  The tradition of Curragh Chase dancing spans four hundred years from the time when Aubrey (the Poet’s) grandfather referred to the ‘ancient practice’ taking place in the area.  His description of ‘country folk besmeared with sweat’ was not applicable to their more hygienic descendants who enjoyed the dancing to music of Michael Sexton from Clare and the ‘Master of Ceremonies’ Pat O’Connell.  Enthusiasts of set dancing may increase their skills and add to their repertoire of sets by joining local classes.  For example, Kilcornan has a class from Monday September 9 in the lounge of Kilcornan House, when children and beginners start from 8 o’clock and may graduate to more advanced sets at 9.00 when the dancing continues to 10.30 pm. Pat O’Connell continues his popular classes in Dolans on the Dock Road on Tuesday evenings from 7.30 (beginners) and 8.30 (advanced).  Many thanks to those who made this event possible and to local businesses and landowners who gave their resources freely for the enjoyment of all.

HERITAGE TOUR:  Knockfierna Heritage Society will hold their annual outing to Cahir Castle, The Swiss Cottage, Rock of Cashel, Holy Cross Abbey on Sunday September 29.  Previous outings have proved to be most enjoyable occasions.  Mr Philip Lynch of Kilkenny will be tour guide for the day.  Those interested in travelling on this outing please contact either Pat O’Donovan Newcastlewest & Rathkeale 087 9977340, Marion Hanley Ballingarry 087 9741387 or Mary O’Keeffe 087 6990816.  Cost €20 per person.

COMMUNITY RADIO:  Our own West Limerick Community Radio serving the people of West Limerick and running as a voluntary service invites you to their AGM on Tuesday September 24 at 8.00 pm in the Desmond Complex, NCW.  Have a say in running this important service.

Each participant will have the opportunity to learn how to grow a wide range of delicious foods using organic methods with an emphasis on practical skills and an opportunity to gain certification. To apply for a place on the course please contact the course tutor Marie Tuttle on 0863132969."

GAA LOTTO:  This popular weekly continues at different locations on Monday evenings.  The draw on August 26 for a Jackpot of €4,800 was not won as no member predicted the winning combination of 11, 17, 18 & 26.  Lucky Dips of €50 were drawn by John Hickey, David O’Neill, Eamon Lynch & P Timmons.

Kildimo Community Notes W/E August 24 2013

RECENT DEATH: There was deep shock in the Pallaskenry area recently when the news of the unexpected death of Mr John Keating reached the village. Son of Lily and the late Sgt John Keating, the deceased who was in his 45th year, had taken early retirement and was living in Greece. He is deeply mourned by his mother Lily, siblings, extended family and many friends RIP.His funeral will be celebrated  locally and details will be announced shortly. May his gentle soul rest in peace.

GRAVEYARD MASS: The many past generations will be remembered at Mass on Friday August 23 at 7.30 pm in Kildimo Cemetery. Fr. John will lead the celebration and you might like to remind those outside the parish about the event.  It also offers a reminder to carry out any last minute tidying of your family plots

Kildimo Gathering Weekend: Thanks to the efforts of the community council   and other volunteers the programme of events went without a hitch. The recently refurbished Carnegie Library was the venue for an Arts & Craft exhibition hosted by the Killulta ICA Painting Group together with their friends from the local women’s painting group. Works from  approx. 14 local artists together with a variety of handcrafts were on display over the weekend. A historical walk conducted by members of the Kenry Historical Society and visiting speaker Milo Spillane from Croom was well supported despite the inclement weather. A respite at ‘The Seven Sisters ‘Pub on the way added to the occasion.
An opportunity to socialise and meet old friends and new over the week-end was afforded with sporting activities in the GAA Field, and a fishing competition in Bleach Lough. Music and dancing in all the local pubs together with Limerick singer and song-writher Mick Hanly in Concert concluded the activities.

HERITAGE WEEK:  The opening of this annual week was overshadowed by the local Gathering activities, but the calendar of events offers lots of interesting heritage events for Co. Limerick and surrounding counties.  The Desmond Hall, NCW offers another chance to catch Joseph Lennon’s talk on Castles of the county on Wednesday August 21 at 7.30 pm.  At the same venue on the following Saturday and Sunday at 4.00pm there are musical treats of the West Limerick Singers Club and an Uileann Piper Recital.  If you have any interest in the Titanic disaster, the exhibition in the Tourist Office Askeaton is a must as it profiles the local involvement in the event.  This is open to the public on Thursday and Friday, August 22 & 23 from 10 am.  If you’re an O’Brien (or even if you aren’t), the ‘Heritage of Brian Boru’ is on offer on Saturday August 24 at 10 am on the Jetty at Killaloe, followed by a boat trip on the lake to point out places of interest related  to the great man, the 1,000 year celebration of who’s death takes place next year.
If you have the ‘Event Guide’ for the week, you’ll find lots of other events that might interest you or any visitors you might be entertaining.
