Guerins Platform Sept 1st 2013

ORAL HISTORY:  West Limerick Resources will be running an Oral History Training Initiative this autumn.  Training will consist of two elements.  Participants will develop Oral History Interviewing techniques as well as examine the legal and ethical issues relevant to gathering Oral History.  The second element of the training will focus on digital voice recording and editing techniques.  Training will also explore how oral history can contribute to the local heritage of communities and identify suitable ways of showcasing their research.  Training is expected to begin in October and to run one evening per week for 10 weeks.  The course is free of charge and open to people living in the West Limerick area.  To register for the programme contact Suzanne on 069 79114 or email srowley@wlr.ie

MOTOR NEURONE DISEASE:  A fundraiser for the Irish branch of this group will be held in ‘De Bucket’ on September 6 at 8.00.  This is in memory of local lady Joan O’Mahony who died last year in England as a result of contracting the disease.  Pa & Steve will supply the music during the barbeque which will include a raffle on the night.

GUERIN’S PLATFORM DANCING:  Another great day’s dancing was enjoyed in the sun on Sunday September 1.  The tradition of Curragh Chase dancing spans four hundred years from the time when Aubrey (the Poet’s) grandfather referred to the ‘ancient practice’ taking place in the area.  His description of ‘country folk besmeared with sweat’ was not applicable to their more hygienic descendants who enjoyed the dancing to music of Michael Sexton from Clare and the ‘Master of Ceremonies’ Pat O’Connell.  Enthusiasts of set dancing may increase their skills and add to their repertoire of sets by joining local classes.  For example, Kilcornan has a class from Monday September 9 in the lounge of Kilcornan House, when children and beginners start from 8 o’clock and may graduate to more advanced sets at 9.00 when the dancing continues to 10.30 pm. Pat O’Connell continues his popular classes in Dolans on the Dock Road on Tuesday evenings from 7.30 (beginners) and 8.30 (advanced).  Many thanks to those who made this event possible and to local businesses and landowners who gave their resources freely for the enjoyment of all.

HERITAGE TOUR:  Knockfierna Heritage Society will hold their annual outing to Cahir Castle, The Swiss Cottage, Rock of Cashel, Holy Cross Abbey on Sunday September 29.  Previous outings have proved to be most enjoyable occasions.  Mr Philip Lynch of Kilkenny will be tour guide for the day.  Those interested in travelling on this outing please contact either Pat O’Donovan Newcastlewest & Rathkeale 087 9977340, Marion Hanley Ballingarry 087 9741387 or Mary O’Keeffe 087 6990816.  Cost €20 per person.
