RECENT DEATH: There was deep shock in the Pallaskenry area recently when the news of the unexpected death of Mr John Keating reached the village. Son of Lily and the late Sgt John Keating, the deceased who was in his 45th year, had taken early retirement and was living in Greece. He is deeply mourned by his mother Lily, siblings, extended family and many friends RIP.His funeral will be celebrated locally and details will be announced shortly. May his gentle soul rest in peace.
GRAVEYARD MASS: The many past generations will be remembered at Mass on Friday August 23 at 7.30 pm in Kildimo Cemetery. Fr. John will lead the celebration and you might like to remind those outside the parish about the event. It also offers a reminder to carry out any last minute tidying of your family plots
Kildimo Gathering Weekend: Thanks to the efforts of the community council and other volunteers the programme of events went without a hitch. The recently refurbished Carnegie Library was the venue for an Arts & Craft exhibition hosted by the Killulta ICA Painting Group together with their friends from the local women’s painting group. Works from approx. 14 local artists together with a variety of handcrafts were on display over the weekend. A historical walk conducted by members of the Kenry Historical Society and visiting speaker Milo Spillane from Croom was well supported despite the inclement weather. A respite at ‘The Seven Sisters ‘Pub on the way added to the occasion.
An opportunity to socialise and meet old friends and new over the week-end was afforded with sporting activities in the GAA Field, and a fishing competition in Bleach Lough. Music and dancing in all the local pubs together with Limerick singer and song-writher Mick Hanly in Concert concluded the activities.
HERITAGE WEEK: The opening of this annual week was overshadowed by the local Gathering activities, but the calendar of events offers lots of interesting heritage events for Co. Limerick and surrounding counties. The Desmond Hall, NCW offers another chance to catch Joseph Lennon’s talk on Castles of the county on Wednesday August 21 at 7.30 pm. At the same venue on the following Saturday and Sunday at 4.00pm there are musical treats of the West Limerick Singers Club and an Uileann Piper Recital. If you have any interest in the Titanic disaster, the exhibition in the Tourist Office Askeaton is a must as it profiles the local involvement in the event. This is open to the public on Thursday and Friday, August 22 & 23 from 10 am. If you’re an O’Brien (or even if you aren’t), the ‘Heritage of Brian Boru’ is on offer on Saturday August 24 at 10 am on the Jetty at Killaloe, followed by a boat trip on the lake to point out places of interest related to the great man, the 1,000 year celebration of who’s death takes place next year.

COMPASSIONATE COMMUNITIES: A range of useful leaflets are available at local libraries that emanate from Milford Care Centre. These information leaflets deal with a range of sensitive issues all illustrating the expertise of this caring centre on matters relating to illness and death. While few will feel confident in dealing with such sensitive life and death situations, often the care extended and welcome will be in practical matters such as helping with the shopping or with household chores. CYCLE FOR CHARITY: In its sixth year, the Cliona’s Foundation Cycle takes place this year from the Honeyfitz Theatre in Lough Gur on Saturday August 31. With three routes to cater for all grades of fitness, the event will end with a Barbeque, face painting, music and a bouncy castle. CURRAGHCHASE GATHERING: All roads from the parishes of Cappagh, Rathkeale, Adare, Askeaton and Kildimo lead to the platform at Curragh Chase Cross for a Guerin’s Platform ‘gathering’ on Sunday September 1. Pat O’Connell will create order out of mayhem in conducting the dances to the music of one-man band, Michael Sexton who will leave this venue to play for the month at Lisdoonvarna where he has the annual gig. GAA LOTTO: This popular weekly continues at different locations on Monday evenings. The draw on August 12 for a Jackpot of €4,600 was not won as no member predicted the winning combination of 4, 12, 14 & 28. Lucky Dips of €50 were drawn by Jackie Griffin, John Moloney, Fintan O’Donnell & Richard Kennedy.
