HERITAGE WEEK

You may have noticed posters heralding the onset of ‘Heritage Week’. This annual international week is set aside to highlight all aspects of our heritage. As the ‘Kenry Historical Society’ is interested in historical heritage, naturally their events are on that theme. The week begins on August 22 and the first local history tour is on Sunday August 23rd at 3.00 in the Coillte Carpark, Curragh Chase, Coillte generously offering free entry at the barrier from 2.30pm. The theme of the walking tour is ‘The Hidden Curragh Chase’, the aim of which is to uncover aspects of the area related to those who toiled behind the scenes and to point out areas withing the estate which are not normally on the tourist trail. Guides on the day have had family connections with the De Vere family as workers on the estate. Michael Costello is the coordinator. He already has printed a compilation of photographs of this area and his knowledge is drawn from his intimate association with the area. Reserve a place in your diary also for the ‘Ringmoylan Walk’ on the following Sunday,August 30th again at 3.00, when Derek Cahill will lead the tour.

COMMUNITY COUNCIL

Tickets are still available at €10 for an evening of nosh and craic at the Community Council barbeque. Tommy McCauley’s band will be on hand to get toes a tapping at ‘De Bucket’ on August 21. It would help to plan the event if you bought your ticket in advance at the venue or from a member of the community council. Fun starts at 8.30pm. Invite your friends!

NEWBORNS

Congratulations to Mikey Nealon of Middlefield who had painless delivery of his first grandchild through his daughter Marie and her husband Thomas O’Brien who lives in Murroe. The Coughlans Michael and Kathleen of Court happily announce the birth of their third grandchild, a first for William and Ali in the person of William (Jnr).

FR. MURPHY’S MISSION

Fr. Murphy wishes to record his thankfulness to all who supported the recent ‘Bring and Buy’ sale at Kilcornan Community Centre. The organising committee were also appreciative of the response to the initiative which will do much to progress the building of the school and church on his mission. You may support this worthy cause at any time by contacting any member of the fundraising group.
