YOUTH CLUB

The local Youth Club ends a very successful year’s activity largely thanks to a dedicated team under Dermot Mullane comprising of Catríona Griffin, Cathy O’Hanlon, the Guinan sisters Siobhán and Aisling, Maurice and Ann Dolan, Kristan Collopy, Gary Dillon, Tommy O’Shea, Maria Flannery and Sarah O’Dea. The use of Copswood premises is due to the co-operation of Paddy O’Neill and Armelle Mangan. The profusion of games played ensures a healthy membership playing Soccer, Basketball, Volleyball, Dodgeball, Badminton and Unihock as well as Pool, Table Soccer and Air Hockey. A girls dance troupe has also been formed with several engagements under their leotards. Entrepreneurship is fostered by the running of the Youth Club Shop. Future projects being planned are a newly designed Santa’s Grotto for their 2010 Twenty-first anniversary celebrations and a major filming project to record Kildimo and its environs in the beginning of the 21st Century. Congratulations to all the participants whose dedication to the cause is evident in the successes of 2009.

ENGAGED

Don Mullane agrees with the adage that ‘Diamonds are a girl’s best friend’ and his newly-affianced Margaret O’Rourke of the P.O. is in total agreement. Margaret claims ‘total surprise’ when Don uncharacteristically went on one knee, signalising his commitment to lifelong servitude- which in acceptance of the ring she promises to remind him of for years to come. There is no truth in the rumour that Peggy was standing over him during this event with the instrument she uses to roll out her pastry! Best wishes are extended to the happy couple for their plans to roll out the gold band at a future date- to be announced.

JIM GRIFFIN MEMORIAL CHALLENGE

The referee for the annual challenge between the Soccer players and the GAA players, Liam O’Connor, decided on a ‘half game’ on account of the condition of the pitch. Only half the pitch was playable so the game got off to a late start to facilitate the thaw. The final whistle found the teams locked at two apiece, so penalties had to decide the result. The hurlers proved the victors- again- on a score of seven to three. The combatants and their enthusiastic followers together with the Griffin family, were entertained to soup and sandwiches by John and Joanne Griffin where the AFC Treasurer Brendan Walsh presented a cheque for €1055 to Peter Hickey of the ‘Going Strong’ Committee. The Club Manager John Tierney presented the Memorial Trophy to Tom Griffin, brother of the late Jim and team captain, and John McKeogh, hurling manager.

SENIORS PARTY

The annual Senior Citizens Party is much anticipated by patrons and this season’s event takes place at the usual venue of the Seven Sisters on Sunday, January 10. As usual the invitation is cast widely and any new members to the community are especially welcome. This is a great opportunity to renew old friendships and maybe make new ones. The format of the evening will be like those in the past and any intending guests in need of transport might contact any member of the organising committee or John Griffin. This party is made possible through the financial assistance generously given at the annual Churchgate Collection and the voluntary donations from business patrons.

ANGLING NEWS

Visitors to the Bleach Lough angling venue cannot but be impressed by the developments in recent times, as are the three hundred plus paid up members. The newly constructed entrance with its electronic ornate gates overlooked by floodlight and cameras, lead on through the new entrance road to a well-developed car park. The Marina caters for forty boats, with eight new ones acquired by the club, two of which are equipped for wheelchair anglers. There are also four new shore platforms one of which includes stable and safe access for wheelchairs. The voluntary efforts of the club officers and members has brought all this to fruition with funding from West Limerick Resources, the National Lottery and Limerick Co. Co. The development of this local leisure resource augurs well for a bumper season and an increase in membership when the Club reopens in March 2010.
