RECENTLY DECEASED

The death occurred recently of Dina Fitzgerald (nee Downey), of St. Joseph’s House, Ballybrown and formerly Shannongrove, Pallaskenry.  She was predeceased by her husband Tom and is survived by her sons and daughters and extended family.  Her remains reposed in Downey’s Funeral Home before the removal to St. Joseph’s Church Ballybrown where her funeral Mass was celebrated on Sunday, July 18, before internment to Kildimo Cemetery.
Burial Ground Masses
In memory of those who have gone before us, Masses will be celebrated in their honour in Kilcornan Graveyard on Wednesday, July 28 and in the ancient graveyard of the parish in Castletown on Wednesday August 4.  Locals who have relatives interred in Lismakeera Graveyard in Askeaton, will attend Mass in that church ruin on Tuesday, July 27.  All Masses commence at 7.30 pm.
GOLDEN JUBILEE

Fr. Michael Murphy celebrated fifty years of priestly ministry with his confreres in religion, his brother priests locally, his family and friends from his native Kilcornan and adjoining parishes.  The celebratory concelebrated Mass took place in St. John the Baptist Church, Kilcornan on Sunday, July 18 at 1.30 pm.  In his homily he paid tribute to all those who assisted him in his vocational journey and in supporting his ministry in Nigeria where he has served all his years and presently as Vicar General in St. Dominic’s Parish, Shachi, Makurdi, Benue State.  Mickey- as he referred to himself and which all knew him locally- worked at home with farmers and with the Sheehy Brothers and especially with the late Jack and Maisie to whom he was especially attached.  Following his emigration to England, he joined the labour force in Dagenham Motor Works, where he started at the lowest rung of the ladder in sweeping the floor.  This activity gave him much opportunity to reflect on life and on the lives of his English workmates.  His perception of the lack of God in the lives of many led him to think of dedicating his life to the priestly ministry and this he pursued in the order of the Holy Ghost Missionaries.  It is obvious from Fr. Michael’s words in regard to ‘his’ people in Nigeria, that he is as much ministered to by these underprivileged people as is his ministry to them, reflecting the sacred text that ‘It is in giving that we receive’.   Following the liturgy, the congregation moved to the Community Centre locally, where his friends and helpers served a celebratory meal with an appropriate cake to mark his Jubilee.   Fr. Michael will be recharging his pastoral batteries in his native Cowpark before returning to his ministry in Nigeria.
He is wished many more years of productive work by his legion of missionary helpers at home.

FERRYBRIDGE QUARRY CAMPAIGN

A meeting was held on Tuesday, July 13, in Ballybrown GAA Clubhouse to decide on the distribution of the remaining funds from the Ferrybridge Action Association’s “opposition to the quarry” campaign.  As agreed at the outset, in 2006, the funds will be divided equally between Kildimo and Clarina.
It is proposed that the Kildimo funds should be distributed to the Tidy Towns group to continue its work in enhancing the environment of Kildimo. It is also hoped to use these funds to highlight the “Golden Mile” walk along the Old Road as an amenity for the community.  A meeting to discuss this proposal will be held on Wednesday July 28. at  8.00 pm in the Carnegie Library,Kildimo. Please attend to have your say.

ART IN THE ‘AULD TOWN’
Askeaton is again holding its annual art extravaganza and all are invited to enjoy.  Michele Horrigan is the brains behind this worthwhile project to bring art from the academies to the people.  At 3.00pm on Saturday, July 24, there will be a Reception at the Civic Trust Office in the East Square, where the participating artists will be introduced, following which the Curator of the event will conduct a tour of the works on show in the town.  The exhibits to be seen are sure to evoke your wonder and curiosity and act as a challenge to our confined aesthetic horizons.  Further information on the event may be had by contacting www.akeatonarts.com or to Michelle at 087 2977179.

MOTHERS WANTED
If you’re a mother it means that you have gained lots of experience in the process of rearing your child or children.  This experience could be invaluable in helping other mothers who may be without support in rearing their child and who may be away from home and friends.  Such a young person would gain enormously from a more experienced mother who would offer support.  The Social Services Centre in Henry Street are looking for support mothers who would give limited hours to help others.  Training will be given in how to give such assistance.  Ring the Centre at 061 411643.

FREE INFORMATION PACK
If you’re interested in hosting an event during ‘Know your neighbour weekend’, then the information pack available from info@knowyourneibhbour.ie will help.  You may also text KYN followed by a space and your name and address to 51444.  The pack includes posters to publicise the event, a booklet of invites to your event and personal stickers of introduction.  Macra who are sponsoring ‘Know your Neighbour Weekend’, on July 24/25, will gladly and promptly supply you with a pack.  Nuala Kavanagh of Glenameade has many bookings that weekend to host her very successful in house ‘Cookery demos to Eat’ as a means of easing neighbourly introductions.

WATER SAFETY WEEK

An average of 160 persons lose their lives in Ireland annually by drowning.  In many cases you wouldn’t need to be a spectacular swimmer to save these lives.  All levels of swimmers will receive training during ‘Water Safety Week’ for a minimal cost.  In our area three centres of training are available with accredited tutors.  Askeaton Pool runs a course from 9 – 14 August, starting at 8.30 am.  Copswood Pool has courses from July 26 – 31 and from August 23 – 28, all beginning at 10 am.  Both of the above courses cost €40- a small cost for a human life.  Glin Pier hosts a course from August 16 – 21, starting at 11.00 am and 10. 00 respectively.  Courses here are influenced by local tides and the cost is €30.  All participants of whatever level of swimming competency will receive credits for successful participation.  Such credits may eventually lead to qualification as Lifeguards at public swimming venues.  Enquiries about training to Michael O’Sullivan at 061 393204.
