KILDIMO COMMUNITY NOTES W/E September 11 2010

Davy Gleeson Ballinacarriga with his New Potatoes

COMMUNITY COUNCIL

The September 2010 ‘Newsletter’ was launched at the Barbeque on Friday, September 3.   Copies are available from any member of the Council and will be delivered to households.  The five-page document brings up to date the many activities under way in the community.  Maps of projected developments are included as well as a Questionnaire to ascertain the present opinions of the community in regard to future growth and development.  Public cooperation is necessary for community development and new members are always welcome to join the local council by contacting Chairman Tommy O’Shea (394409), Secretary Dermot Mullane (087 9319005) or PRO Mary Conway (087 6521806).
TIDY TOWNS
The site for the Community Centre has been finally secured after a lengthy legal process and preliminary work will soon begin on the entrance area.  As an interim measure the area nearest the street will be developed into a community garden with seating, to be enjoyed by young and old.  This area which has lain undisturbed for years supports a variety of wildlife to be enjoyed by visitors who may wish to take some time out.  The results of this year’s Tidy Towns Competition will shortly be made public on www.tidytowns.ie and however Kildimo fares in its first year of entry, it has to be admitted that the efforts of the working group has paid dividends in enhancing the village.  For the wider community this newly established Tidy Towns Group has to be given the ‘thumbs up’ and are winners for us.  Their successive planting and care of the tubs will continue over the autumn and winter with appropriate plantings.

BIG POTATO

Davy Gleeson of Ballynacarriga decided it was best to dig up his mammoth potatoes before they took over his little garden.  Experimenting with a new variety, he had never expected that they would reach this size.  Two that he is pictured holding are respectively two and a half and three pounds in weight and must be a record (no pun intended!) for this area.  The ‘Guinness Book of Records’ gives the largest potato as a British-produced seven pounds and one ounce.  Had Davy chanced leaving it in the ground, who knows what size it would have realised.  Other potato growers locally are on high alert to match or surpass the Ballynacarriga spuds, which were produced without any special forcing or fertilizing techniques.  Beat  that!
Bantracht Na Tuaithe

Cupcakes are the order of the day as members prepare for the forthcoming Federation Meeting on Wed September 29 in Woodlands Hotel,Adare.Bets are on as to who will be the Kildimo Queen with Old Kildimo and Court the favourites but some dark horses are also in the race !
COMMUNITY LOTTO
On Tuesday August 31, the Numbers drawn were 10, 13, 14 & 16.  Because no punter predicted this combination, Lucky Dips of €20 each were drawn by Peggy Gleeson, Ballynacarriga; Peter & Emer, Old Kildimo; Emma Griffin, Old Kildimo; A & D O Brolcháin and Kathleen Coughlan of Court.  Your €2 ticket to win a Jackpot of over six and a half thousand, is available from the P.O., De Bucket, Slattery’s, Seven Sisters and Dromore Inn.  Support your local community lotto.
CULTURE NIGHT

We have been treated to culture from various sources in the past.  The ICA ladies have hosted visual art at De Bucket, Dermot Mullane has an online portfolio of photographs, we’ve participated in international ‘Drawing Day’, Tommy McCauley has entertained our ears- most recently at the Community Council Barbeque, the Book Club meets regularly, poets and writers beaver away in their garrets, our own songstress from the creamery road, namely Doris Shire, brings joy and gladness to many through her performances at home and abroad.  We could go on…  So how about bringing together some of these artists in our own Kildimo celebration of ‘Culture Night’?  This is an annual event, much celebrated in the larger towns and cities, but not necessarily so.  We have enough local talent to have an evening of culture with readings from local writers, local storytelling, song and dance, etc.  Let us know about your ideas for such an evening, tell us of those friends and neighbours too modest to ‘come out’ themselves. Your local correspondent will happily channel your suggestions to the organisers.
