KILDIMO COMMUNITY NOTES W/E October 23 2010

Kildimo Ladies at Mini Marathon

FUNDRAISING FOUR

Four local ladies who successfully completed the recent Limerick Mini-Marathon, dedicated their efforts towards the worthy cause of Cystic Fibrosis.  This debilitating and life-threatening disease that affects mainly the lungs and digestive systems has been much in the news lately for all the wrong reasons.  Hospital isolation is a necessity for such patients when they must go for treatment and hospital policy advises that they do so in spite of any perceived risks.  Luckily for patients of the Mid-Western Hospital, services there are better than in hospitals in Dublin and the consultant in charge in the Regional has special expertise in treating these patients.  The four ladies who completed the marathon are Rosario Harte, Ballynacarriga; Marian Mulhall, Julie Fitzgerald and Margaret Fitzgerald of Mellon.  They wish to thank subscribers to their chosen charity, especially children who raided their ‘piggy banks’ to help the less fortunate.  Over €1,000 was raised by their efforts, all of which will go towards prolonging the life expectancy and ensuring a better quality of life for local CF sufferers who use the facilities at the Regional Hospital.
.

COMMUNITY LOTTO JACKPOT €7,050.
As the Jackpot rises, so also do sales of tickets at €2 each.   The numbers drawn on October 12 were 7, 13, 21 & 27.  Because no member of the draw predicted this combination, ‘Lucky Dips’ were drawn for €20 each.  Prizewinners were Jennifer Griffin, Old Kildimo; Maire O’Curry, Ballynacarriga; Pat Byrnes, Court; Mary O’Brolcháin, Ballycasey and A & D Brolcháin also of Ballycasey.

JUST THE STORY
If you’re the victim of the recession and cannot get away for the October Bank Holiday, then the Storytelling Festival at Lough Gur might lift your spirits.  The programme over the weekend has all kinds of storytellers as well as interesting musical events like Sean Keane from Galway, well-known male member of that talented family.  The programme is available.
KENRY HISTORICAL SOCIETY
The local historical society goes indoors for the rest of the year and the first lecture takes place on October 27 at 8.00 pm.  Our lecture venue has changed to the Community Centre Pallaskenry and the lecturer on the night is the ever-popular and erudite Br. John Feheney.  Br. John has done much work in researching people who have contributed in the past towards forming our community and he willingly shares this knowledge with all who are welcome to attend.

NEWBORN
Congratulations to John and Aoife Tierney of Old Kildimo who have joyfully been delivered a new baby boy named Daniel.  His three-year-old sister Katie is also delighted with the new arrival but not enough to share her ice cream with him, as “he is too young”, she sagely says.  Meta McDonnell has made a welcome return to Kildimo to be on hand to offer the benefit of her experience to her daughter.

Mary Conway is soliciting craft workers to join in a Craft Fair in the Seven Sisters on Sunday November 14, from 2.00 – 6.00.  Denote your interest by contacting Mary at 087 6521806 or maryconway087@vodafone.ie.

SALESIAN COLLEGE NEWS
Salesian Mission in Africa Society continues to meet at the school.  This is an awareness group promoting the work of Fr. Martin McCormack.
Transition Year Students have started a new programme called Junior Achievement with Joanne McGuiness from Junior Achievement Ireland.  This Programme will involve linking the Transition Year Students with local business and enterprises in our area and will include guest speakers from these businesses.  This course will continue for the rest of the year.

RUBY CELEBRATION
Fr. John Donworth, P.P. declared himself very pleased with the Ruby Anniversary Mass, celebrated in St. Joseph’s Church on October 15.  He acknowledged the part of the people who gave generously towards building the structure and those patrons who donated the land on which it is built, namely the O’Shea, Ward and Nolan families, whose members conducted the Offertory Procession.  Among the concelebrants on the evening was Fr. John O’Shea, P.P. of Abbeyfeale, who was in Deacon’s Orders when the Blessing and Dedication of the Church took place on December 6, 1970.  During the celebration, the four decades were marked by remembrance of those who initially and latterly celebrated the sacraments of Baptism, Communion, Confirmation and Marriage, along with the first and last funeral rites.  All the details of the celebration are to be found in the Mass Booklet for the occasion, which touchingly concludes with a ‘Reflection’ by Tom Griffin that is worthy of quotation.
We loved our ancient little Church;
Where we did go to Mass.
We worshipped Christ together there,
As year by year did pass.
But was the old home good enough
For Christ our King to stay?
We built this new, still humble, home,
Where all can kneel and pray.
