CROSSROADS DANCING:  Following the great success of Guerin’s Platform Revival last September, the local committee in Kilcornan have settled Sunday May 13 for the next event.  Sunday 13 is the nearest Sunday to the old traditional date for the Fair of Stonehall.  Dancing begins from 3.00 pm with local musicians, singers and dancers.

WINNER:  ‘Jolly Bobby’ blew away the opposition on his first time out at Limerick on April 7, proving that trainer Mary O’Rourke of Glenameade can still produce a winner.  His time was 29.01 giving him plenty to spare over his nearest rival at a price of 5/2.  Looks like a promising future for Bobby with greater triumphs and full purses ahead.

BANTRACHT NA TUAITHE: All good wishes are extended to the members of the new ICA guild in Pallaskenry. Their inaugural meeting took place on Wednesday March 28 with Noeleen McMahon, Castletown, Aileen Healy, Tubbermurray, and Mary O’Connell, Glenameade elected as President, Hon Sec, and Hon Treasurer respectively. A warm welcome is assured to all who wish to join them at their next meeting on Wednesday 11th April at 8pm in the local Community Centre.

KENRY HISTORICAL SOCIETY:  The first event of this year for the history society is on the afternoon of Sunday, April 29 when we will traverse the area of the Maigue from the Ferry Bridge to Ardcanny graveyard.  Derek Cahill will lead the tour, beginning with the history of the castles that guarded the first crossing of the Maigue upriver from its entry into the Shannon.  Some of the Castles guarding this important ford and later ferry are now gone but their history remains and even their stones still tell their tales, as some of these went towards the building of the bridge that replaced the Ferry crossing.  As the Fitzgerald family are the great influence in building many of the tower houses/castles of Kenry, Derek will point out many interesting features of the castle built by them and still in Fitzgerald ownership in Court.  Progressing northwards along the west bank of the Maigue, the next major structure is the large bawn and towers of Ballyculhane Castle, the seat of the important Purcell family who played such a significant part in Limerick’s history up to the ill-fated Treaty.  Time permitting the tour will continue to take in what was once the parish centre of worship for the area in the townland of Mellon, namely Ardcanny ruined Protestant Church and graveyard for both the traditional and the reformed Christians.

COMMUNITY LOTTO:  ‘Jackpot Numbers’ drawn on April 3, for a Jackpot of €10,850 were 6, 15, 19 & 27.   No member predicted this combination so ‘Lucky Dips’ of €20 each were drawn by Brian Barrett, Bernie Nolan, Marie O’Curry, John Sheehan and Ollie Hickey.

GAA LOTTO:  On April 2, numbers 9, 11, 17 & 26 were drawn for a Jackpot of €20.000.  No member predicted this combination so ‘Lucky Dips’ of €50 each were drawn by S. McCauley, Ballyvareen; Eddie Kirby, Cloonagolleen; Kieran McMahon, Ballynacarriga and Martin O’Dea of Ballyculhane.

BIRTHDAY PARTY:  You may now safely wish Davy Gleeson of Ballynacarriga good wishes on his eightieth birthday.  His age was made official at a ‘Surprise Party’ in the Corner House Pallaskenry on Easter Sunday, a week after he reached in excess of  the biblical ‘four score and ten’.  His favourite traditional band, ‘The Ag Lads’ from Copswood Agricultural College, travelled long distances to celebrate the event and entertain the large gathering that swelled Davy’s favourite hostelry.  The secret of Davy’s rude good health has to be his own home-produced garden produce and the culinary skills of his wife Elma in preparing it.  Good wishes Davy from the Gleeson clan, your neighbours and friends and all that know you and hope to enjoy your company for many more years.

SALESIAN COLLEGE:  ‘Passion for Fashion’ is the catchy tag for the forthcoming annual show that was recently launched at Bentley’s Bar, O’Connell Street on Wednesday, March 28.  This fourth show takes place in the Woodland’s House Hotel on Wednesday, April 25 at 8.00 pm.  As the Principal Mr Paddy O’Neill says, ‘Our 49 transition year students, teacher models and parent models will definitely turn heads on the night with the fabulous fashion that will be shown.  People who are interested in fashion and a good night out will not be disappointed’.  Fashion designers and boutiques from the region will be showcasing their Spring/Summer collections and Hugh Campbell’s hair stylists and Reva’s Beauticians will prepare the models for the catwalk.  Adult tickets for the night cost €15, students €8 and families of four €40.   You also have a chance to win a fantastic raffle prize on the night.  The night’s Compere is Lorcan Murray of RTE.

GREAT LIMERICK RUN: Maria O’Sullivan, Clorane will be running in The Great Limerick Run on May 6th to raise funds and create awareness for The Declan O’Shea Trust.  Maria’s brother Declan suffered serious spinal injuries in an accident last October.  Due to the nature of Declan’s injuries he will have on-going medical treatment needs and ‘The Declan O’Shea Trust’ has been established to provide him with assistance in this regard.  Full details of the trust are on www.thedeclanosheatrust.com .  Sponsorship cards will be available in local businesses or by contacting Maria on 087-7727000.  Your support is much appreciated.

POSTCARD ART:  As is well known, Kildimo has no postcard on sale for visitors.  Two artistic and enterprising local ladies will put that to right in their ‘Design a Postcard’ Competition.  This is open to all adult amateur artists in any paint media who will submit entries on unframed A4 size, with a €5 entry fee.  You have all of the summer months to work on your idea of what you think best illustrates Kildimo.  The winning entry will be chosen by an outside judge and printed in a limited edition for local distribution.  All entries will be exhibited towards the end of September.  It is important to keep in mind that the winning entry is that which best epitomises Kildimo, whether that be a village scene a landscape, historical building or whatever.  Any further details about this exciting initiative may be had from Roisín at 086 1989370 or Cathy at 086 6038288.
