Birdwatch Ireland

Birdwatch Ireland’s next field trip is to Aughinish on Sunday January 18, meeting at the Aughinish Visitors centre at 2.00 p.m.

Geoff Hunt will visit all three bird hides at Aughinish. This area is the largest area of mudflats in Co Limerick, and the Shannon Estuary has the highest winter numbers of wildfowl and wader birds in Ireland. Nationally important numbers of Lapwing, Golden Plover, Shelduck and Dunlin occur. Many of the waders roost at high tide on rocks close to the shoreline.

Aughinish Alumina in recent years has established Ireland' s first Butterfly Sanctuary, and a Dragonfly Sanctuary. An extensive nature walk has also been put in place that overlooks the Shannon Estuary and Poulaweela Creek, with the bird hides overlooking various parts of the estuary.

Full details of Birdwatch Ireland's events can be seen on the events section of their website www.birdwatchireland.ie
