LOCAL WEDDING

The ‘Infant of Prague’ had the desired effect on the weather on Saturday afternoon, May 15, when local girl Margaret O’Rourke made the spectacular crossing of the N 69 in her bridal wear, accompanied by her mother Peggy. The village was awash with haute couture with a backdrop of sartorial black to highlight the colours. The nuptial alliance of Cork and Limerick took place under the watchful ministry of Canon John O’Shea on loan from Abbeyfeale for the occasion and the local P.P. Fr. John Donworth. Pat and Mary Mullane from Castlemartyr made the journey to witness the happy union of their son Don, with the beautiful bride. In attendance on Margaret were cousin Margaret Morris-Downes with her Maids Lourda Doyle and Niamh Boland. The Groom was supported by his brother Patrick and friends Anthony O’Shea and Patrick O’Callaghan. A classical combination of strings and vocals punctuated the service with appropriate musical numbers. Following the nuptials the wedding party moved to Dromoland Castle for the very enjoyable reception and the celebrations that followed into the small hours. The Caribbean is the romantic location of the honeymoon from which the couple will return to their new home in Coolbeg, with the best wishes of families and friends and the local community.

GRAND OPENING

Following years of dedicated work at Bleach Lough, the finale is the opening of the Bleach Lough Anglers facilities on May 23. The Club premises at the Lough are a monument to voluntarism with the necessary financial aid from West Limerick Resources, Limerick Co. Co. and the National Lottery. The state-of-the-art facilities will be unveiled at an ecumenical blessing at 3.00 pm and the opening by Joan Hevenor, Mount Pleasant, whose late husband Pat was a founder member. Club members will welcome visitors at any time to witness the facilities. The entrance with automatic gates and lights is mid-way between the White Forge junction in Curraheen and eastwards towards Frost Hill in Ballynacarriga. The area has been beautifully landscaped and planted with spacious carparking facilities that are free to members. There are several platforms for shore anglers, including one to accommodate disabled and wheelchair members. Facilities for boats include eight for use of members and day-permit holders as well as a marina for private boats. And as usual where you’ll find fishermen, you’ll also find lots of free advice on how best to land the wary and scaly. Belief in fishermen’s tales is at your own risk! Seeing is believing in regard to this major local amenity.

KENRY HISTORY SOCIETY OUTING

Forty members and friends of the Kenry Historical Society, made the short journey to the nearby parish of Cappagh on Sunday afternoon, May 16. The local guide was Jim O’Riordan, whose knowledge of the area is extensive from the time of Queen Elizabeth the First to her counterpart of the present day, and who gave freely to the captive and captivated audience. The tour began at the parish church of St. James where local history is written into the stained glass windows, which are dedicated to local people of note. From there Jim led the short walk westwards to the National School, where he recalled the memory of some of its more notable students, including the author Father ‘Patch’ O’Carroll who wrote his novels based on the area, while he was in the U.S. Among the other places that Jim led the group to were the site of the earlier church which was damaged in the night of ‘The Big Wind’ and the area where once stood the adjacent old village of Cappagh, the church of Kilmacluana, Gallows Hill, the McEniry Castle courtesy of the Barry family and the very ancient Cappagh House facilitated by the Morrissey Family. The Kenry Society expressed their thanks to the tour guide and made him a suitable presentation of a historical book.

‘THE N69 TOUR’

Shannon Development has printed a new leaflet to encourage tourism along the N69. Significant sites from King John’s Castle to Tarbert Bridewell are mentioned and the emphasis is on commercial interests, for example regarding Clarina it is suggested that ‘perhaps’ you might stop ‘for some horse-riding’. On our village of Kildimo, the entry suggests driving ‘through’. So has Kildimo nothing to offer the tourist? No mention of the wonderful fishing facilities at Bleach Lough, the stunning views of Dromore Castle reflected in the waters of the lake of the same name, the capital castle of Kenry at Shanpallas, the unique and possibly oldest church in Co. Limerick in Killulta, Tower Houses, Holy Wells, Historic Houses, original thatched cottages, old RIC barracks, battle sites, pre-famine roads, ancient burial places, ring forts, public houses, retail outlets…
