KILDIMO COMMUNITY NOTES W/E May 15 2010

Mary O'Rourke ,Kildimo and Billy O'Keeffe,Ballysteen sketching in Adare

WORLD SKETCHING DAY

Local involvement with worldwide sketching got off to an ideal sun-kissed day at Adare, on Saturday May 8.  Twenty interested persons from east to west Limerick and all parts between bravely ‘came out’ and wielded their pencils in public, mostly for the first time.  Three accomplished artists offered their services to guide the sketchers in their individual efforts and as appropriate, the mysteries of ‘vanishing lines’, ‘eye-level’ and ‘horizon lines’ were explained.  These tutors expressed satisfaction with the work of their charges that brought renewed interest to and examination of the built and natural environment in the village park and adjacent buildings.  The aims of international sketching day were achieved in the expressed opinions of the sketchers in seeing their world in a renewed way, which will enrich their lives into the future, in the words of one of the tutors in ‘lifting the scales from our eyes’.  Thanks were expressed to Pauline, Jim and Val for their enthusiasm and expertise in guiding what will become an annual involvement in this international event.  Other local events of this kind will take place later in the month, for example, sketching at the Hunt Museum on May 22.  This event begins with a tour of famous works by Picasso, Henry Moore and others and sketchers will then record their own response to these works.  Materials are supplied for this event and it is family oriented and free.  Interest in this ‘Cinderella’ of artistic endeavour has been awakened in many of those who attended the ‘sketching day’ and the formation of a ‘sketching group’ that might meet at various locations and explore and develop the interest, has been suggested.  The local correspondent will receive opinions on the matter.
