UNICEF FUNDRAISING

Young Emma Griffin of Old Kildimo who came in contact with the Unicef organisation through her school in Askeaton, was fired up as a result to do something for the less fortunate. For example a mere €11 will buy twenty packets of high nutritional biscuits to allay hunger and disease. The wide and beneficial effects of the €200 donation from her fundraising efforts can be easily computed with a little arithmetic. Many of those who contributed to Emma’s effort were impressed with her originality and her male donors have got much to ruminate upon and possible plans for similar actions in their lives. Emma spent a full working day and into the night in silence and thus merited the financial reward for Unicef. Is the idea likely to catch on? In another and less politically correct age, many a male would gladly reward his female companion for such action. Any males foolish enough to suggest it to their partners to-day may be sure of receiving a stony silence in return. Worth a try!

YOUTH CLUB

This successful year’s activities will come to a close with an overnight camping trip to Copswood on Saturday, June 5, and a celebratory barbeque for members’ families, guardians and friends who gave so generously of their time over the past year. Over the summer holidays, club members are going to make a film to record Kildimo and environs as a historical record. You may be sure that such a record will be of tremendous benefit for future historians while in the process of making it will no doubt instil a greater appreciation of our native place as seen through the lens.

TIDY TOWNS

The local Tidy Towns Group has now submitted its entry to the Tidy Towns Competition 2010. Adjudication takes place over the summer months; the area to be judged is along the main road between the 50 KPH signs and from Slattery’s to the Seven Sisters. The adjudicator will be looking at all aspects of the village’s environment including the conservation and preservation of buildings, landscaping, wildlife and natural amenities, litter control, tidiness, waste minimization, residential areas and the presentation of approach roads, amongst other things. The Tidy Towns Group has produced a three-year plan of work and some projects are already underway. The flower tubs in the village will be replanted shortly and some poppy seeds have been scattered on waste ground. The Group wishes to thank all those living within the adjudication area for the great efforts they are putting in to tidying up and adding colour to our environment with fresh paintwork and planting. If everyone could carry on maintaining the areas outside their front walls and picking up litter whenever they see it, we will be able to present our village in the best way possible. Kildimo has also been included in the ‘Limerick in Bloom’ competition which will be judged in mid July. Many thanks to all for their efforts in keeping Kildimo “TIDY”.

FUNDRAISING BARBEQUE

Milford Care Centre needs no introduction to the thousands who benefit from its care. It largely depends on voluntary financial help and such an initiative will be provided by ‘De Bucket’ as it hosts a Barbeque on Friday, June 4 at 8.30 pm. Tickets will be on sale in advance of the evening at €10 each. Be sure to come and enjoy the ceol, ól agus bia on its Maigeside patio. All proceeds go to this deserving cause. The wide range of services provided by the Centre, extend beyond their premises, embracing the whole family affected by serious illness and ageing.

ART ON SHANNON’S BANK

Barbara Hartigan of Castelconnell has launched the idea of a painting session on the riverbank in her native village. The idea is that artists who paint in whatever medium will gather at this beautiful river walk at 11.00 am on Saturday, June 12, weather permitting. An estimated time of three hours is allowed before easels are packed and works exhibited- and put up for sale- at a local venue where the morning’s activity will be discussed over tea and biscuits. Access to the venue is through the Castle Oaks Carpark and all are welcome. Barbara is available to answer queries on 061 377269 or 087 9539989 or by e-mail to info@BarbaraHartigan.com.
