You can learn more about this if you come on the walking tour of the Hollypark area on Sunday August 29. This event which will be conducted by local native Michael Costello, begins near the entrance to Hollypark and Curragh Chase at 3.00 pm. With the willing cooperation of the owners of Hollypark House, the tour will also take in that area of the Taylor’s house which is built on the much earlier Fitzgerald castle, of which flanking towers still remain. The event is organised by the Kenry Historical Society and is free to participants. Wheelchair access is possible and children supervised by guardians are welcome.

TIDY TOWNS

The dedicated work of the newly-formed Tidy Towns Committee is plain to see in the village environs with floral displays and Rubbish Bins. Another consideration which the committee cannot personally influence is the presence of dog fouling on the footpaths and outside residential areas. Quite apart from the serious health issues which can accompany this problem, especially for children, the environmental issue is one frequently commented upon by the Tidy Towns adjudicators. It would greatly help if dog owners ,who should accompany their pets in public places, remembered to remove their leavings and dispose of it in a sanitary way. Under Section 22 of the Litter Pollution Act of 1972, dog owners are obliged to remove their dog faeces from public places and the public may report such offences to the District Court.

PALLASKENRY HERITAGE WALK

On Sunday August 22, the Historical Walking Tour of Pallaskenry took place under guides Derek Cahill, Sean Cotter and Brian Culhane. The proceedings begun at the Caulfield House, now the Salesian Community House. Derek outlined how the Caulfield family amassed their riches from involvement in the East India Trading Company and this enabled them to purchase extensive lands in Ireland and build their family seat in Pallaskenry. This house was then on the roadside and so to ensure privacy for the family the road was re-routed northwards from the present gates, ensuring a distance from the public gaze and curtailing the latter by a high enclosing estate wall. Members of the Caulfield family are interred in a vault in Killurach graveyard, which was the next port of call. The history of the Church of Ireland on the site was outlined and reference was made to some of the people of both main churches who rest together in peace there. A representative of the Methodist church spoke about the proud history of the followers of John Wesley among her Palatine antecedents in the area. At the next stop on the tour at the Grand Gates, the history of that area was recounted by the leaders. From the Millennium Stone at Nash’s Cross, the group proceeded to the old school, now the Community Centre. The history of the many schools in the area that preceded the development of the National Schools, where private enterprise prevailed over the new public British Government inspired initiative. Opposite the Community Centre was the area where the supposed vision of Our Lady caused a frenzy of local and national interest in the 1950’s. This event was recounted by the first-hand report of many of those present who were schoolchildren with the ‘visionary’ at the time. A very popular film of the time about the story of Fatima, was suggested as a possible influence. A tree inside the wall near the site was a casualty of the many visitors who took away its wood as relics and the water from a little stream nearby was collected for the same purpose. The evolution of Catholic Church structures serving the area was dealt with when the history-lovers visited the building in the main street. The value of the Carnegie Library nearby was recalled, not only for its books but also for other educational events such as cookery demonstrations, which were conducted there. The Film shows held there provided a social event in black and white to the amazement of the old, while ‘Hopalong Cassidy’ sent the young boys home beating their rumps in simulation and terrifying imaginary Indians. En route to the Methodist Church, now the Scout Hall, various architectural features of the village, its lanes and orchards were pointed out. Tribute was paid in passing to one of the past authors in Irish and English, namely the late Mairtín O’Corbuí (Martin Corboy), who spent his lifetime teaching in the area. His school books ‘as Gaeilge’ were part of the National School curriculum of his time and his ‘History of Kenry’ still provides a rich mine of local history and is still available from the reprinted version by the local Community Council. Another earlier author, namely Gerald Griffin who lived in the village with his brother the dispensary Doctor, was remembered in a tribute by Brian Culhane whose family resides in the same house where the Griffins lived. At the end of the tour, the Chairman of the local ‘Kenry Historical Society’ thanked the participants and their leaders and invited history devotees to the next ‘Heritage Week’ event at Hollypark entrance gates on Sunday, August 29, at 3.00 pm.
