BROADFORD ARBORETUM

Ted Cooke, Native Woodland Specialist, visits Broadford Wildlife Arboretum again on Sunday October 10th next, as part of the Annual Broadford Village Festival. The arboretum has been planted, under Ted’s stewardship, with all 27 of Ireland’s native tree species. Ted will host a wildlife talk starting at 2.30 p.m., which will include a coppicing demonstration, with a discussion on the purpose and method of woodland coppicing. Coppicing is the practice of cutting back trees leaving only a small stump remaining, from which new stems emerge. It was widely practiced in traditional forest management, and can be used on a wide variety of native tree species. Coppicing is carried out on a 4 – 5 year rotation, providing a continuous supply of cut timber stems of a certain size. Ted will elaborate on the benefits of this traditional craft from social, economic and environmental viewpoints. Also discussed will be the important work of nature’s decomposers in native woodland, and how to encourage a health community of decomposer flora and fauna, showing examples in the Arboretum. The Arboretum in Broadford, (Co. Limerick) is located across the road from Broadford Church. All are welcome. There is a walking route around the arboretum with a hand rail designed to aid the blind, and there is partial wheelchair access. More information from Ted Cooke, on 086-8789891, ideally after 6.00 p.m.
