KILDIMO COMMUNITY NOTES W/E Nov 13 2010

Comhbhrón


The death took place in Manchester recently of Bridget O’Neill, nee Walsh, formerly of Rockfield, Kildimo.  Her funeral took place to Kilcornan cemetery where she joins her late husband Michael on Friday, November 5, following requiem Mass in St. Mary’s Church, Pallaskenry.  Sympathy is also extended to Fr. Donal McNamara our former P.P., on the recent death of his sister Louise in Kensington, London.  She is also survived by her sisters Angela, Josephine and Eileen and was predeceased by her brothers Denis and Thady.  Her internment took place to Mainister graveyard following Mass in the local St. Michael’s Church on Friday, November 5.  The death has occurred of Ms Phyllis Considine, Loughlinstown Dublin, and late of Ballyculhane, Kildimo.  She is deeply mourned by her sisters and brothers, including her brother Pakie, Ballyculhane, extended family and friends, RIP.  Following Requiem Mass in Loughlinstown Church on Friday October 29 her remains were removed to Harold's Cross Crematorium, Dublin. Burial arrangements later.

CHURCHGATE COLLECTION
On Saturday November 13, a Churchgate collection will be taken up at local evening Mass for Kildimo Senior Citizens.  This funding will go towards holding the annual Christmas party, the date for which will be announced later.  

GRAVEYARD PRAYERS


Many thanks to all who contributed so generously to the Annual Burial Ground maintenance fund that was taken up at Kildimo and Ardcanny graveyards.  These donations help to boost the nominal maintenance grants received from Limerick Co. Co. and enable extra work to be undertaken.
On Sunday November 14, prayers will be  recited  in Castletown cemetery at 12.00. 

NEWBORN


Congratulations to the Collins family, Ballyculhane whose new baby Lalyla arrived to Barbara and Mike.  Her big brother Michael and Adam along with sister Keelin are taking justifiable pride in their newest sibling.

Mass for deceased ICA members and relatives will be celebrated on Saturday Nov 13 at 7pm in Kildimo Church.
The Killulta ICA Painters art exhibition ‘Nollag na mBan XI ‘ will be officially opened by Federation President Anne Gabbett in Newcastle West Library on Tuesday November 16 at 3pm  Bí Linn agus Fáilte

NATIONAL SCHOOL FASHION SHOW

A fashion for fundraising show will take place in the Woodlands Adare on Thursday, November 11 at 8.00 pm.  This is in aid of the school building fund and tickets are available at €15 from members of the Board of Management, the Parents Association or the school office.  


CHRISTMAS CRAFT FAIR  
Lots of Christmas gifts for sale at reasonable prices at ‘The Seven Sisters’ on Sunday next  November 14, from 2.00 to 6.00 pm.  Late exhibitors may still attend by contacting Mary Conway at 087 6521806.  

SOCCER NOTES

The annual fundraising ‘Race Night’ will be held in the ‘Seven Sisters’ on Saturday, December 4.  A fun night is assured with the first race off at 9.00 pm.

DROMORE CASTLE
If you missed the Nationwide programme featuring abandoned houses of Ireland where our own ‘local historian’ Derek Cahill was featured, then you still have the chance to view the programme by going to the RTE website and finding ‘Player’.  Derek, as we know has a deep knowledge of the architecture of Dromore Castle and its designer Godwin.  A book about abandoned houses features Dromore and is available, as is an exhibition on the topic, in the ‘Vision Centre’, St. Peter’s Church, North Main Street, Cork.  
KENRY HISTORICAL SOCIETY
Admirers of the work of Br. John Feheney and those who enjoyed his recent talk to the local history society, will be interested in the book that covers the topic, namely ‘Adare and the Barony of Kenry, Biographical Dictionary’.  Tom Donovan of the society will launch the work at the golf club Adare on Saturday, November 27 at 8.00 pm.  If you are lucky to have a copy of Br. John’s previous publication that covers personages of Askeaton and Ballysteen, you will know that you can expect a feast from this latest book.  Some five hundred people from his catchment area are featured- all deceased- and all contributors in one way or another to the area.  The golf club clubhouse is the one nearest the bridge in Adare and is more safely approached from the Lantern Lodge side.
HISTORY TALKS
Glin Historical Society are hosting a talk at Loughill Resource Centre on Wednesday, November 10, at 8.00 pm.  Title of the talk is ‘The War of Independence in West Limerick’ and the speaker and expert on the topic is Tom Toomey whose book on the subject entitled ‘The War of Independence in Limerick’ is available.   The Rathkeale and District History Society hold their talks at the Community Centre, Enniscouch and on Friday November 12, Ray Lyons- member of the Thomond Society- will address the meeting on ‘Clerical Students of Maynooth Seminary’.

SPECIAL RAMBLING HOUSE


Knockfierna Heritage Society are hosting a very special event at Con Colbert Memorial Hall Athea, on Saturday November 13 at 8.00 pm, with an admission cost of €5.  The evening will follow the usual successful format of music, song and story but the very special speaker on the night will be the nephew of the local hero after whom the Hall is named and another Con Colbert.  This will be a historic ‘Rambling House’ not to be missed.
Following the successful 2010 Tour of England, our local Doris Shire/Costello and the artists will bring their tour home to Lisdoonvarna for staging on Saturday, November 13.  A coach is being laid on to take you to the door of the venue for a token cost of €5.  Seats must be booked in advance for the coach which will leave Abbeyfeale at 4.30 pm and pick up customers en route.  Contact Kay at 068 48353 to book. 

ORGANIC GARDENING


County Limerick VEC is catering for the renewed interest in organic gardening by holding a thirty-hour course in the NCW area in late autumn or early spring.  The course is open to all who should make their interest known to Eveleen at  069 62667 as soon as possible. 

SALESIAN COLLEGE NEWS


John Lonergan, former Governor of Mountjoy Prison, will attend the College on Wednesday, November 10 and will speak to 5th and 6th year students in the afternoon.  Parents are invited to attend that night at 8pm when Mr. Lonergan will give a presentation on parenting skills in the school hall.
On Wednesday November 25, the second part of the cervical screening vaccination will take place for 1st and 2nd year girls.
On Monday November 15 an Information Night will be held in the Demonstration Room at 8pm foparents/guardians of 6th year students regarding options for further education, i.e. CAO, PLC’s, UCAS, Apprenticeships, etc.  Mr. O’Connor, Guidance Counsellor will make the presentation.
Transition year students will travel to Denmark as part of their Danish Cultural Exchange Programme on Thursday November 11, returning on November 18. Students will continue with the driving lessons with the Irish School of Motoring. On Thursday students will continue with their Junior Achievement Business Project. On Friday students will continue with their Youth Leadership Programme, Alive n’ Avail 9am to 12.30pm. Students will start their first block of work experience on Monday November 29.  

 
COMMUNITY LOTTO JACKPOT €7,000 Plus. 
As the Jackpot rises, so also do sales of tickets at €2 each.   The numbers drawn on November 2 were 11, 12, 19 & 21.  Because no member of the draw predicted this combination, ‘Lucky Dips’ were drawn for €20 each.  Prizewinners were Joe Gleeson, Ballynacarriga; Mary Hogan, Pallaskenry; Nathan Hogan, Pallaskenry; Mary Ellen Griffin, Old Kildimo and Eva McCormack, Old Kildimo.
