COMMUNITY COUNCIL


0ur local Council were pleased with the numbers who showed interest in their community service by attending the consultative meeting on November 8.  They outlined the work they were pursuing in consulting with various bodies in relation to  the development of our local community.  This consultation with the community will proceed in a further meeting in December.  Matters under discussion included recreational and community facilities, prospects for the development of tourism and commercial enterprises, crime and safety and village design. 
The complicated negotiations in regard to the community site have taken years to finalise and presently work is progressing in planning this area in consultation with the Co. Co. and with planners O’Leary and Associates and the private developers Keelgrove Construction.   

CHRISTMAS PLANS
This is the twenty first year of erecting a Christmas Tree in the village and the plans are for a Childrens Party.  Help and ideas are solicited to make Christmas 2010 a special one for all.  Dermot Mullane awaits your input by contacting him at 087 9319005.

Mass will be celebrated on this Saturday November 20 at 12.00 in St Joseph’s Church, Kildimo for the repose of the soul of Ms Phyllis Considine, Loughlinstown Dublin, and late of Ballyculhane, Kildimo.
Bantracht Na Tuaithe
The Killulta ICA Painters art exhibition ‘Obair na mBan XI ‘ was officially opened by Federation President Anne Gabbett in Newcastle West Library recently. The exhibition ,which will continue to the end of the month, may be viewed during normal library hours.

Floral Demonstration
A floral demonstration will be given this Thursday November 18 at Limerick Milk Market by Siobhan Downey of Zen Blooms. This will commence at 1pm and there is no charge. Do go along and enjoy.

ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS
St. Mary’s School/Coláiste Mhuire celebrates seventy years in education.  On September 17 1940, Polly O’Mahony began teaching in rented rooms with colleague Elizabeth O’Shaughnessy and nineteen students.  The part played by Mrs Nora Hawkes in the school since she joined the staff in 1945 is the stuff of history.  This proud history will be celebrated with an anniversary Mass in St. Mary’s Church Askeaton on Saturday November 20 at 7.00 pm.  The unveiling of a plaque in honour of the foundress will take place after Mass at the Library and refreshements will follow in the Coláiste afterwards.  Celebrations will conclude with a visit to O’Mahony’s Bar.
NEW RUGBY CLUB

Catering for children up to aged 12, this new club called Copswood Gaels RFC, hold their training sessions on Sunday mornings from 10 – 11 at Copswood College.  As our national team appears slightly wobbly at the moment, this may be the place to start building!  Anthony O’Donovan the club secretary may be contacted at anthonyodonovan13@hotmail.com

SOCCER NOTES
The annual fundraising ‘Race Night’ will be held in the ‘Seven Sisters’ on Saturday, December 4.  A fun night is assured with the first race off at 9.00 pm.

KENRY HISTORICAL SOCIETY

‘Who killed Mr. Dawson’ was a local cant following the murder of the Rev. Dawson in Ballynacarriga.  This topic will be the subject of the History talk on Wednesday, November 24 at Pallaskenry Community Centre at 8.00 pm.  The speaker Noreen Curtis has written her thesis for her B.A. degree at Mary Immaculate College on the subject and will present her findings on the night.  The Reverend gentleman was connected to the Westropp’s of Mellon and his intention was to settle in the area following the erection of his house in Ballynacarriga.  His plans may have upset some locals who occupied the land and it is thought that they murdered him for that reason.  Murder of Protestant clergymen was no rarity in the troubled Ireland of that time because they mainly belonged to the landed gentry and tithes were levied from the impoverished populace to support them, so giving two possible reasons for their unpopularity.  Noreen has trawled through the accounts of

ART AND CRAFT EXHIBITION
The local ‘Díoma Artists’ are hosting an exhibition of their work on the weekend of December 3 to 5.  The official opening will be performed by a special guest on Friday evening at 7.00 pm.  Work will be on sale and a percentage of sales will go towards the Alzheimer’s in Adare. 
BOOK LAUNCH
Adding another book to the long line of his publications, Br. Feheney’s latest work will be launched on Saturday, November 27 at 8.00 pm.  Entitled ‘Adare and the Barony of Kenry, Biographical Dictionary’, it will feature many from the area who dedicated their lives towards service as priests, nuns and religious.  Kildimo had a particularly high number of vocations and many local family members are therefore profiled in this work.  Tom Donovan of Corcamore who recently edited the monumental work on the ‘Knights of Glin’, will perform the honour at the Golf Club Adare, which is situated on the Limerick side of the bridge near the Castle.  

ORGANIC GARDENING


County Limerick VEC is catering for the renewed interest in organic gardening by holding a thirty-hour course in the NCW area in late autumn or early spring.  The course is open to all who should make their interest known to Eveleen at  069 62667 as soon as possible. 

 
COMMUNITY LOTTO JACKPOT €7,000 Plus. 
As the Jackpot rises, so also do sales of tickets at €2 each.   The numbers drawn on November 9 were 3, 7, 10 & 21.  Because no member of the draw predicted this combination, ‘Lucky Dips’ were drawn for €20 each.  Prizewinners were Peg Conway, Ballycasey; Mary O’Mahony, Ballyrune; John Walsh, Pallaskenry;  Alison Griffin, Old Kildimo and A & D O’Brolcháin, Ballycasey.  
 
BIRDWATCHING
The Limerick Branch of Birdwatch Ireland and heading to Quilty, Co.
