KENRY HISTORICAL SOCIETY

‘Who killed Mr. Dawson’ was a local cant following the murder of the Rev. Dawson in Ballynacarriga.  This topic will be the subject of the History talk on Wednesday, November 24 at Pallaskenry Community Centre at 8.00 pm.  The speaker Noreen Curtis has written her thesis for her B.A. degree at Mary Immaculate College on the subject and will present her findings on the night.  The Reverend gentleman was connected to the Westropp’s of Mellon and his intention was to settle in the area following the erection of his house in Ballynacarriga.  His plans may have upset some locals who occupied the land and it is thought that they murdered him for that reason.  Murder of Protestant clergymen was no rarity in the troubled Ireland of that time because they mainly belonged to the landed gentry and tithes were levied from the impoverished populace to support them, so giving two possible reasons for their unpopularity.  Noreen has trawled through the accounts of the time and presents her findings on the night
ART AND CRAFT EXHIBITION
The local ‘Díoma Artists’ are hosting an exhibition of their work on the weekend of December 3 to 5.  The official opening will be performed by a special guest on Friday evening at 7.00 pm.  Work will be on sale and a percentage of sales will go towards the Alzheimer’s in Adare.

COMMUNITY MEETING

Be sure to set aside December 16 for the next meeting of the local Community Council.  This is a follow-on to the previous consultative meeting, the findings of which will be presented by O’Leary and Associates in a draft plan for the village and environs.  It is important that the community assess this plan, which may impact on all our lives into the future.
NEW RUGBY CLUB

BOOK LAUNCH
Br. John Feheney has published a companion volume to his previous Biographical Dictionary covering Askeaton and Ballysteen.  This will be launched at Adare Golf Club on Saturday November 27, at 8.00 pm.  The title of this latest publication is ‘Adare and the Barony of Kenry Biographical Dictionary’.  The Launch will be conducted by historians Tony Brown and Tom Donovan.  In Br. Feheney’s recent lecture to the Kenry Historical Society he pointed out the large number of vocations to the priesthood and  religious life from the Kildimo area and you may find their biographical sketches in this book.  It is clear from the Reference list that Br. John has been extending his carbon footprint in consulting relatives of those within his pages.  His wishes are that this work will prove “useful and enjoyable”.
Active Retirement
Fr John Donworth PP celebrated Mass for deceased members of Civil Defence in Kildimo last week. The ARA members then had lunch in ‘De Bucket’Pub, Ferrybridge, followed by a most enjoyable social afternoon.  Friendships were renewed, absent colleagues remembered and all too soon it was time to depart from Maigueside to various parts of the county including Athea, Bruree, Castleconnell, Glin, Garryspillane and elsewhere. Go dtí an chéad uair eile.
