LOCAL THATCHING

If you missed ‘Ear to the Ground’ on RTE 1 on either February 8 or the repeat on Sunday February 13, you may still view the show on RTE Player on your computer.  Local interest in this programme was the feature on thatching which was filmed on the O’Brien house in Ballyculhane.  Tommy Roberts from Clarina was not exactly enjoying the best weather conditions as he provides a new roof for the house.  It was gratifying to note that local river reed is the thatch of choice, as much reed is presently being imported from Eastern Europe.  Dr. Fidelma Mullane- an academic expert on thatch pointed out the benefits of using the local men and reed on the carbon footprint.  Mícheal O’Brien who was born in the house, said that he’s the sixth generation of the family there.  And it seems positive that many more generations will continue the family lineage in Ballyculhane.

GOING STRONG

Be sure to set aside Sunday March 6 for the annual ‘Going Strong’ party.  The venue is the same- for newcomers that means ‘The Seven Sisters’.  Assemble at 2.00 pm to be seated and warmed by a festive potion.  This will be followed by a four-course meal, dancing to Donie Walsh and final refreshments at 7.00 pm.  Recently retired persons are invited to join in the fun and meet with your neighbours.

SAGE ADVICE

This advertisement was printed in the programme for a concert in Kildimo in 1939.  The advice by Maurice O’Rourke from his pub (now the Seven Sisters) is as valid to day as it was pre-war, and publicans and their patrons might enjoy its advice.

COMMUNITY COUNCIL NEWS

As you must be aware, funds are being made available for the upgrading of Slattery’s corner and the bend at Bolane.  You may learn all about these projects and more by attending the next consultative meeting which takes place at the ‘Seven Sisters ‘ Pub, Old Kildimo on Wednesday next  February 23 at 8pm. Plans for the village are reaching an advanced stage and will shortly be submitted to the Co. Co. for final approbation.

EAGLE

A flurry of interest among bird-watchers was caused by the sighting of a White-tailed Eagle recently in Ringmoylan.  This may be a migrant from Kerry where it is being re-introduced from Norway.  The west coast of Ireland was well stocked with these birds before they were hunted to extinction in the 18th century. While this was a rare visitor, regular sightings of Whooper Swans, Little Egrets, Grey Herons and Dunlins are also to be seen.  It is hoped to erect a board near the pier to alert visitors to the native and visitor species that inhabit this area.

AFC NEWS

The local club is holding a fundraising ‘table quiz’ on this Friday, February 18.  Such efforts are vital in promoting the activities of the club, so come along and join in the fun.  The Dromore Inn is the venue and you should have your team in place at €5 each for kick off at 9.30 pm.  Congratulations to club member Kyle Hayes on his selection for the Kennedy Cup Squad.

COMMUNITY LOTTO JACKPOT €7,800 Plus.

The Lotto draw of on February 8, was for a prize of €7,800 and no punter predicted the winning combination of 3, 4, 13 & 20.  In consequence, ‘Lucky Dips’ of €20 each were drawn by Emma Griffin, Old Kildimo; Ted O’Donoghue, Kilmoreen; John Meade, Old Kildimo; John O’Mahony, Ballyrune and Ann O’Dea of Carheeny.  When you next visit the P.O., De Bucket, Slattery’s or the Dromore Inn, be sure to fill in your lucky numbers where a minimum investment of €2 could realise a handsome dividend which no bank will match!

KENRY HISTORY

As part of their ongoing promotion of local history in the barony of Kenry, the local history society are holding a lecture and AGM on Wednesday, February 23 at the Community Hall Pallaskenry at 8.15 pm.  These are available to members and friends alike and this occasion will offer you a chance to elect new officers and committee as the present one is there since the inception of the history society in 2008.  The talk on Wednesday, 23 is on the Kildimo farmer who fortunately for historians wrote a diary from 1740 to 1751.  This has to be the most important source of local history, offering as it does a rare insight into farming life among the gentry and their retainers during this time.  The area at this time was in the throes of an artic winter of such severity that the land was frozen for six months and couldn’t be tilled nor crops harvested.  While the great famine which followed a century later gets most notice historically, earlier famines such as in the eighteenth century are thought to have been just as serious. The relative absence of earlier famines from the history books is probably due to the poorer recording of events at the time.  It is for this reason and for many more that the Diary of Nicholas Peacock of Kilmoreen is a vital document for local historians and indeed for all who are interested in this period when literary levels among the natives was low and their interests were wholly taken up with sustaining their lives rather than writing about them.
