KILDIMO COMMUNITY NOTES W/E March 5 2011

Voting in Kildimo Feb 2011 Mary Gallagher

LOCAL VOTING
They came by wheelchair, some by walking aids and in the process notched up a high 72% of the local electorate.  Showing the way for the high number of new and young voters, were Mary Gallagher of Kilmoreen and Mary Ellen Griffin of Old Kildimo, both nonagenarians and veterans of many elections.  The high turnout of voters was in contrast with the lack of canvassers and party representatives usually noted near polling booths.

DOGS RUN FOR KILDIMO
Kildimo Community Council and Kildimo AFC are joining together for the first time for a fundraiser night at the new Limerick dog track on Friday the 18th of March.  The two groups will be selling tickets door to door over the coming weeks. Be a friend and bring a friend, your support to the family night out would be greatly appreciated.

GOING STRONG
The annual festive dinner and dance is upon us and will be held at the Seven Sisters on Sunday, March 6, from 2.00 pm.  As always the invitation is generous and wide so if you are a retired person or if you know of any others who would like to attend, then there will be a ‘céad mile fáilte’ to all.  You will be seated from 2.00 pm with an aperitif to sharpen your appetite for the four-course meal that follows.  Donie Walsh will then take over to induce you to dance, as will the hardworking committee members who make the event possible. Transport will be provided should it be required by contacting  Peter Hickey.  Always an enjoyable evening.

LOURDES FUNDRAISER
Pancake tea/coffee afternoon will be held on Tuesday March 8 in ‘Seven Sisters ‘Pub, Old Kildimo between 2pm and 5pm., proceeds in aid of Limerick Diocesan Lourdes Invalid Pilgrimage. Your support would be much appreciated.

NEAR MISS
The need for road safety improvements in the village and environs was exemplified by the ‘near miss’ recently when a truck wheel careered down the village street.  This was dislodged from a large tanker coming from the west which shed the wheel near the junction at Slattery’s, scattering its fixing nuts en route.  Luckily for local residents and shoppers at the P.O., the wheel didn’t encounter anyone as it came to rest down the street.  The truck driver was notably shocked when he was made aware of the incident and came to stop in the village.  It seems that work had recently taken place on the wheel in question so it is likely that this may have had an influence on the potentially fatal event.

NEW SPECTATOR SPORT
Culinary art has gone spectator.  There was a time when cooks took pride in offering their families wholesome meals, which is surely the purpose of the art.  Nowadays you can hardly expect to see some sport on television with all the programmes featuring food preparation.  Furthermore there are hordes of high-hatted chefs roaming the country with their vast entourage of assistants and in the process packing in the venues as they strut their stuff to “oohs’ and “aahs” from spectators who wouldn’t know a roué sauce from monosodium glutamate.  You could hardly get anyone to make a traditional Seville orange marmalade to-day, but should you need ‘onion marmalade’ to top your buttered toast, no bother at all.  Don’t expect a good selection of wholesome vegetables with a nob of natural butter anymore, but if you want your veggies ‘Panzanella’, I know several addicts of this new sport who would willingly supply the goods.  If you are lucky to get to the dessert course without picking your way through courses of food intended for little forest people in Borneo or ethnic food from places where tarmacadam has not yet discovered, don’t expect a decent chunk of apple tart like your mother made with generous helpings of ice cream ‘and’ cows cream.  Prepare instead to gaze with delight upon a glass of Panacotta, which you can assume is to be eaten and not massaged into the abdominal ache left from the depletion of real food.  At least this observation is not sexist.

YOUTH CLUB
Planning is afoot for a fundraiser for the Youth Club to finance youth activities.  ‘Bob a Job’ is a well-tried Scout fundraiser, which has endured the ages, even if the ‘Bob’ is well redundant.  The plan is to offer supervised help to perform chores around house or garden that will not entail the use of tools that might endanger life or limb.

A SLOW REVOLUTION
This four-part social history chronicles the highlights of the first hundred years of the Irish Countrywomen’s Association, using archive footage and photographs together with contributions from members. The first episode was shown on TG4 on Sunday  February 20 and with a repeat on the following Friday night.  The remainder of the series will follow on TG4 on Sundays and Fridays.

COMMUNITY LOTTO JACKPOT €8,000 AND RISING.
The Lotto draw of on February 22, was for a prize of €7,900 and no punter predicted the winning combination of 8, 8, 11 & 28.  In consequence, ‘Lucky Dips’  of €20 each were drawn by Jackie Griffin, Clorane; Liam Griffin, Clorane; Jennifer Griffin, Old Kildimo; Ann O’Dea, Carheeny and Margaret O’Reilly, Ferrybridge.  When you next visit the P.O., De Bucket, Slattery’s or the Dromore Inn, be sure to fill in your lucky numbers where a minimum investment of €2 could cover your holiday costs.

BANTRACHT NA TUAITHE

Kildimo members wish to say ‘Thank You’  to all friends and neighbours who supported the ICA cookery Demonstration by Chef Edward Hayden in Woodlands Hotel, Adare recently. The event, which was officially launched by National ICA President Anne Maria Dennison, was a wonderful success.
