A native of Clooncaura Kildimo, Sr Brigid will be sadly missed by her relatives and friends in the area. Her Months Mind Mass will be celebrated in St Joseph’s Church, Kildimo on Tuesday September 13 at 7pm.

KNOCKFIERNA HERITAGE:  A ‘Gramophone Evening’ will be held in the rambling house on the hill on Wednesday, August 24 at 8 .00.  This free event will give you a chance to relive your youth through the songs of John McCormack, Christy Lynch and Delia Murphy and others of those days.  On the following Sunday, August 28, there will be a conducted walk from the rambling house, which will give you an opportunity to view the remains of what was once a thriving community until the potato failure in the middle of the nineteenth century.  Following the walk at 5.00 pm, the group will return to base for an evening of music, song and story.

COMMUNITY EVENTS:  Make a note of Friday September 2 for the Community Council Barbeque.  This is a major fundraiser for the important work of the local council and your support as always is most valuable.  There will be a limited amount of tickets available at €10 each, which will entitle you to gourmet food and musical entertainment at the patio bar of ‘De Bucket’ Pub, Ferrybridge.

CURRAGH CROSS MEMORIAL EVENT:  On Sunday September 11 at 3.00 pm, a commemoration will take place of the local tradition of dancing that took place in the area.  In the 1950’s, the Guerin family who lived nearby, had a portable boarded platform which they erected outside Curragh Chase Gates and was a popular venue for dancers who came from all the adjoining areas.  The poet Aubrey de Vere recalled in his memories how he was very reluctant to leave the dancing when the maid took him home to bed.  His own grandfather, another Aubrey, also recorded the dancing tradition which he said was “ancient” even in his days before the famine.  This earlier Aubrey, mentions the piper leading the dancing and in his colourful language described “rustic bumpkins” who “shook and shuffled dirty buttocks” in their enjoyment of the dance.  The upcoming event will be altogether of a more sanitised nature, while the music and dancing will be mainly as it was of yore.  We are fortunate to still have with us a musician who played for Guerin’s, in the person of Michael O’Neill of Kilnockan railway gates, who with others who remembered the ‘dancing at the crossroads’ at Curragh Chase, will be present on the day.  This free event will be sponsored by local interests.
