KILDIMO COMMUNITY NOTES W/E September 3 2011

COMMUNITY EVENTS:  Make a note of Friday September 2 for the Community Council Barbeque.  This is a major fundraiser for the important work of the local council and your support as always is most valuable.  There will be a limited amount of tickets available at €10 each, which will entitle you to gourmet food and musical entertainment at the patio by Paddy O’Neill, Juan Carlos, Ita O’Donnell and others at the bar of ‘De Bucket’ Pub, Ferrybridge
Bantracht na Tuaithe: Drop in to any ICA person’s home and you will be assured of a good cup of tea.
The water will be boiling, tea pot scalded, and tea allowed ‘to draw’. Keeping the tea pot warm will be
a tea cosy usually made by the bean ‘a ti herself. Kildimo members are not wanting in this skill as demonstrated by their many tea cosies entered in  Cappamore Show .Well done to Maura Hallam who was among the winners
Reminder to all that Kildimo ICA resumes on Wednesday next September7 at 8.15pm in ‘The Seven Sisters’Pub,Old Kildimo and perhaps Maura might demonstrate her skills in the appropriate fields.
DARTS EXTRAVAGANZA FOR CARI:  Local fundraisers are organising a world class event in Slattery’s on September 9 with the visit of John Part, World Champion Darts Player.  Darts enthusiasts can take on the three-times world champ and in the process provide much-needed funds for Cari.  Sponsorship cards are available from Martin Hogan of Slattery’s or from Joe Gleeson.  At 20 cent a line your support will not entail a huge financial burden.  It is anticipated to field sixteen opponents to John, all of whom will raise €100 each in sponsorship.  As you know, the facilities of Cari- ‘Care of Children at Risk in Ireland’ on the Ennis Road, Limerick, is very dependent on volunteer workers and local fundraising to continue this worthwhile venture.  This visit offers non-players a unique chance to see the champion demonstrating his extraordinary skill at the dart board, and a raffle on the night will give you a chance to come away a winner.  John is one of a very few ‘nine-darters’ to achieve that distinction and his Kildimo visit offers a rare opportunity to see this cool Canadian in action.

GUERINS’ PLATFORM:  The Guerin family elevated the local dancing tradition of the Curragh Chase area to a new level with their provision of a wooden platform which they erected at Curragh Cross in the early years of the last century.  Mickey O’Keeffe remembers loading the platform sections onto a jennet and cart and this would be demounted and returned for storage after the event.  Of course in those times the strong clerical influence and the ‘fire and brimstone’ doctrine that prevailed, ensured an over zealous concern on the part of local ‘carers for souls’ and it was not unknown for clerics like the good Parish Priest of Kilcornan to take the law into his own hands to eliminate ‘occasions of sin’.  On one such evening at Curragh, the local pastor removed the bicycles belonging to two dancers which he found abandoned in a ditch- no doubt a girls and boys design- to the safety of the parochial house.  Reclaiming the said steeds, would occasion a strong ear bashing on the dangers of company keeping and its tendency towards sin. You may note the titivation of that area in anticipation of the ‘Commemoration Ceremony’ that takes place in their honour on Sunday, September 11, at 3.00 pm.  A stone that adorns the little triangle will be unveiled on the day by a member of the O’Connell family, formerly of Mornane.  The O’Connell’s had a strong relationship with the Guerins in whose honour they have restored the area, courtesy of the Boyce family whose land adjoins the area.  The strategic location of the platform drew musicians and dancers from all the adjoining areas, providing in the process a ‘platform of romance’ where many a family had its beginnings.  Representatives of these liaisons will attend on the day when the history of the area’s dancing traditions will be delivered by Michael Costello, originally of that general area.  Local musicians with a strong connection with the area and its traditions, will provide music for dancing in the old tradition during the event and Jackie Dillon will gladly give renditions of local ballads.  Parking will be provided locally under the direction of volunteer attendants.

CALLING WRITERS:  Works of literature are being solicited for the next issue of ‘Revival Literary Journal, No. 21’.  The closing date is Friday, September 16 for poetry, short fiction, reviews or critical pieces.  Black and white line drawings are also invited.  Details from The Editor, Revival, ‘Moravia’, Glenmore Avenue, Roxboro Rd. Limerick or e-mail revival@eircom.net.  Guidelines are available on www.revivalpress.com

FEEDING PROGRAMME FUNDRAISER:  Continuing the local community’s interest in the less fortunate, a fundraising event will be held in Kilcornan Community Centre on Sunday, September 4, from 11.30 to 3.30 pm.
The proceeds of this ‘Bring and Buy Sale’ go directly towards offering a balanced feeding to the impoverished population of Zwelishe township, South Africa and will be delivered personally. A working committee on the ground in the township will arrange bags of food which will give necessary nourishment to families in the area for a short period around Christmas.  Enquiries to 061 393637.

COMMUNITY LOTTO:  The draw on August 23 produced numbers 5, 17, 22 & 24 as the winning combination for a Jackpot of € 9,200.  No member predicted this sequence and in consequence Lucky Dips of €20 each were drawn by Nathan Hogan, Pallaskenry; Mary Ellen Griffin, Old Kildimo; Andy Downes, Ballyvareen; Joe Gleeson, Ballynacarriga and Kevin Kelly, Ballyvareen.  You can now have three shots at the Jackpot for €5 at any of the ticket sales venues or from a member of the Community Council.
