KENRY HISTORICAL SOCIETY:  Br. John Feheney returns to present yet another insight into our local history on Tuesday, November 1 at the Community Centre, Pallaskenry.  This presentation will throw light on a very dark period of our history, namely during the famine period in the middle of the nineteenth century.  During this period, a local farmer Thomas Naughton of Ballycasey kept meticulous accounts of his activities.  He was employed as a land surveyor, a skill he later put to good use in differences between landlords and their tenants.  His farm accounts detail the prices paid for butter and hay among other farm produce.  Many local farmers and especially those from the Ballysteen area, are mentioned as having deals with Thomas.  The costs involved in building his new house are detailed and this house still stands in him memory, albeit in a restored state.  The title of Br. John’s talk is ‘Farming in Kenry 150 Years Ago: An Account Book Revealed’ and it begins at 8.00 pm.

DOWN FROM THE MOUNTAIN:  The Knockfierna Rambling House is coming to the Ballintemple Inn, NCW. on Friday, October 28.  The night of music, song and story begins at 8.30.  This is not to be missed as all the usual artists and perhaps new ones will perform for your pleasure for a mere €5.  Enquiries from Pat O’Donovan at 087 9977340.

MARY’S CRAFT FAIR:  Keeping business local is the theme of the second Christmas Craft Fair, organised by Mary Conway.  The venue is the ‘Seven Sisters Pub’ on Sunday November 13, opening at 1.30 pm.  You will find here the answer to all your Christmas present needs.  Further information from 087 6521806.

WEDDING CELEBRATIONS:  The O’Shaughnessys from Kildimo and beyond travelled in numbers to the wedding of James O’Shaughnessy, grandson of Mrs Eileen O’Shaughnessy of Bolane.  James is the eldest son of Billy of Kilbreedy and his wife Mary (Kirby).  James’ chosen partner is Catherine O’Shea from Ennistymon and hence the wedding was celebrated in the Church of St. Columba in Clouna, parish of Ennistymon.  A family friend of the O’Shea’s, namely Fr Ned Crosby, conducted the intimate ceremony, assisted by Fr Gerry O’Shaughnessy SDB, from the Liverpool diocese.  Catherine was assisted by her sister Margaret (Coyle) as Chief Bridesmaid and Eimear McDonagh and Eimear O’Grady.  Bestman Robert O’Grady was supported by Noel and Liam, brothers of the Groom.  Aoibhe O’Shaughnessy acted as Flowergirl while the duty of Pages was fulfilled by Evan Bennett and Darragh O’Shaughnessy.  Maura Coyle and Sinéad O’ Shaughnessy proclaimed the Readings and the mothers of the Bride and Groom, respectively Teresa O’Shea and Mary O’Shaughnessy presented the gifts.  The Prayers of the Faithful were led by Mary O’Shaughnessy, Helen O’Doherty, Miriam McNamara and Valerie Bennett.  Kathy McCormick enlived the celebration with her vocal and musical skills.  On an otherwise very inclement day, an elusive sun made a rare appearance as the newly-weds emerged from church for their short journey to the Falls Hotel Ennistymon by vintage Rolls.  The very picturesque setting for the wedding reception looked its best as the falls on the river Inagh/Cullenagh were in full spate.  As traditional and expected, the father of the Groom added his mellifluous vocals to the enjoyment of all during the musical celebrations following the meal.  Catherine and James are exchanging damp and wet Thomondside for the sun and sands of Dubai for their Honeymoon with the best wishes of their legion of friends and neighbours.
