BOOK LAUNCH:  Br. John Feheney adds yet another book to his large corpus with the launch on Saturday, November 5 of his latest ‘Stonehall Harriers Centenary Record’.  Pat Wallace of the National Museum will introduce this work which is compiled from the records of the club.  The book will feature two hundred and fifty photographs, some never seen before.  On the night of the launch, members past and present of the club will assemble and reminisce.  One such past member was the international athlete Michael O’Neill of Kilbreedy who acted as Whip for forty years.  ‘The Stonehall Harriers Centenary Record’ will provide an invaluable record of the club which was such a force for recreation and a training ground for horses and their riders in the area from the Deel to the Maigue and beyond.  During the evening of the launch, music will be provided by members of the World Music Centre in U.L. Assemble at 7.30 pm at the Community Centre Kilcornan.

KENRY HISTORICAL SOCIETY:  The next lecture date will change from the regular Wednesday slot.  The venue is our usual one at Pallaskenry Community Centre on Tuesday November 1 at 8.00 pm. On this occasion Br. John Feheney will unveil a hidden period in the history of farming in the area during the time of the famine and before.  The title of this talk is ‘Farming in Kenry 150 Years Ago’. This talk is based on a private family record in Kildimo which Br. John is studying and of which he says there could be no more important record for our area or for the dark period of the middle of the nineteenth century.  A unique occasion not to be missed and of interest to lots of local families who had dealings with the author of this record.  On a previous occasion John has mentioned this account/record book in his family history of ‘The Naughtons of Ballycanana’ (2006), the author of the record in question being Thomas Naughton of Ballycasey, Kildimo.  These lands and house are now the property of the Liston family, Pat and Anne.  Thomas Naughton died as a result of an attack by a bull on his farm in 1888.  The ‘Munster News’ of the time (a Cork-based paper before the establishment of the ‘Limerick Leader’), reported his death on June 13, 1888.  His popularity is attested by the ‘unusual numbers’ of people in attendance.  Lots more to come from Br. John.

ROSARIO RUNS:  In training for the last twelve months, the women who walk around Ballynacarriga boreen do so with intent.  Rosario Harte is a regular and is frequently joined by Julia Fitzgerald and Margaret Fitzgerald.  Their training is put to the test in their annual participation in the Limerick Women’s Mini Marathon which took place around the environs of UL on Sunday, October 16.  Rosario and Julia were joined by Pat, Majella and baby Rebecca Hall of Ballinacurra.  Julia Fitzgerald has first hand knowledge of the need for fundraising for ‘Cystic Fibrosis Ireland’ as state funding is inadequate to support the growing number of sufferers who need assistance.  The development of medical services for CF sufferers means that they are now thankfully living much longer lives and state coffers are not keeping pace with such development.
