KENRY HISTORICAL SOCIETY:  The last event of this year went off with great enthusiasm as the speaker on Tuesday November 1 was the popular educator and historian Br John Feheney of Cork and Ballysteen.  The Community Centre in Pallaskenry ran out of chairs to accommodate historical posteriors interested in John’s talk on ‘Farming in Kenry 150 Years Ago’.  Many of the attendance travelled long distances; such was their interest in the topic and in the Journal of the Kildimo farmer which hitherto has not been available publicly.  Farmers among the attendance showed great interest in comparing farming practice and prices from the middle of the nineteenth century with their own experience.  Non-farmers likewise learned much about the unfamiliar vocabulary used in the Journal and may have been disappointed by the description of ‘Strippers’ as belonging to bovine rather than to any contemporary practice.  Br John enthusiastically conveyed to his listeners the great importance of this farming record for a period which has scant records.  Much more of value can be mined from this important source and his listeners look forward to a future expansion on the topic.  One audience member pointed out that past local farming practices are well documented in the ‘Diary of Nicholas Peacock’  which deals with the previous eighteenth century and this, when related with the above record by Thomas Naughton, constitutes a continuous record of farming practice in this area spanning two centuries. These combined records provide a rich local archive of material of use to future students of the subject.

SENIOR CITIZEN’S COMMITTEE:  Sunday November 13 has been set aside for the Churchgate Collection in aid of the annual party for seniors.  This will be taken up at the midday Mass and your continued support for this important annual event is anticipated.
