KILDIMO COMMUNITY NOTES W/E Nov 19 2011


OUR COMMUNITY REMEMBERS:   Past members of the community remembered at Masses include Joe Nealon, Middlefield & Cork, Marie Cowley, Ballinacarriga,& London and Naresh Chaudri, Carheeny.  May their memory live on and their good deeds endure.
 
NATIONAL SCHOOL NEWS:  The Board of Management of the local school is holding ‘Monster Auction’ on Sunday next November 20, in the Salesian Secondary School, Pallaskenry. This will be the main fundraiser for the School Building Fund for this academic year. The auction will start at 2pm. Items for auction include firewood, doors, gates, gym equipment, jerseys signed by Limerick hurlers, Munster rugby and Manchester United soccer teams. A signed Ireland Rugby World Cup 2011 jersey should prove to be the auction's star attraction. 

BANTRACHT NA TUAITHE: ‘The Killulta ICA Painters’ are finalising their next art exhibition ‘Obair na mBan XII’.This annual event will open on Friday November 25 2011 in Newcastle West Library at 4pm and all are invites to attend. It is usually a most enjoyable occasion where family, friends, neighbours and ICA colleagues from many parts join with the Killulta Artists as they show their most recent works. HISTORY CONFERENCE:  The History Society of Mary Immaculate College is inviting all those with interest in preserving and promoting Limerick history to a free conference on Friday, November 25.  This takes place in Summerville House in the College and Registration is at 9.15 am.  The Keynote Speakers are Dr. Hugh Maguire of the Hunt Museum, Professor Bucholz of U.L. and Richard Tobin,  retired planner.  Intending participants should make that known to limericksymposium2011@gmail.com by November 23.
HE COMES AGAIN!  Application to see the ‘man in red’ must be returned with the €6 fee to either the National School or the Seven Sisters.  He arrives on Sunday December 18 and his arrival will be heralded by Bobo who will prepare the way for his lord and master.
RAMBLING HOUSE:  Due to the forthcoming hundredth anniversary of the 1916/1922 era, interest is increasing in this period of our history. Special guest Kevin Barry from Co. Carlow, nephew of Kevin Barry the 18 year old medical student who was hung in Mountjoy Jail on November 1 1920, will be guest speaker at Rathkeale House Hotel on Thursday night next November 17 at 8.30pm.  On a previous visit to the Rambling House in Knockfierna, Kevin had with him letters written by Kevin Barry on the eve of his hanging and also the prayer book which he signed prior to walking to the gallows. This should prove to be a most interesting evening followed by music, song, story and the usual cup of tea.  Proceeds in aid of Knockfierna Historical Society and Rathkeale Town Action Group. WEST LIMERICK RESOURCES:  West Limerick Resource will be offering a short seminar on Employment Law for Community Groups in the Courtenay Lodge Hotel, Newcastle West on Thursday November 24 from 6.30-9.30pm.  Delivered by Canavan Byrne the seminar will cover a wide range of issues which community employers should be aware of in relation to personnel management, contacts and terms of employment.  Admission free.  Supported by West Limerick Resource under the Local and Community Development Programme.  For further information contact Suzanne on 069 79114 or email srowley@wlr.ie


 
HISTORY LECTURES:  The Thomond Society’s lectures are always open to the public and their next one is on the ‘Young Ireland Rebellion and Limerick’ on Monday November 21.  All their lectures take place in the new Tara Building at Mary Immaculate College and they all begin at 8.00 pm.  The series of free lunchtime lectures continues at the Hunt Museum on Fridays in the Captain’s Room, beginning at 1.00 pm.  Friday 18 has Dr. David Fleming uncovering ‘The Hidden Politics of eighteenth-century Limerick’ and on the following Friday Dr. Tadhg Moloney’s lecture title is ‘Michael Joyce, the hard-working but unsung representative for Limerick, 1900-1918’.  Should you fail to get to this latter lecture, then you may read about the topic in the comfort of your own home in Dr. Moloney’s 2010 publication by Cambridge Scholars Publications entitled ‘Limerick Constitutional Nationalism, 1898-1918’.  Kildimo readers of this interesting work will find a local connection in a Limerick Mayor of that time, namely Bryan O’Donnell.    
BIRDWATCH IRELAND:  Are visiting Curragh Chase Forest Park on Saturday November 19 to look at Jay, usually an elusive bird but which is in plentiful supply there. We also hope to locate Brambling, Chaffinch, Tree Creeper and Goldcrest and many more. A tapping sound may reveal the Red Squirrel which still holds its own habitat here.
Meet at the Kilcornan House Pub, across the road from the entrance at 9.50am, for departure at 10am. Entrance to the Park is free for the group; otherwise there is a €5 charge per car.  Leaders: James Hayes and Maura Turner. 

SALESIAN COLLEGE NEWS: Thanks to all who took part in the Shoe Box Appeal bringing in a shoebox filled with gifts for those less fortunate. 
On Friday November 24, our Remembrance Service will take place.
Congratulations to Ms Dowling and her Debating Team - Brian Curtain, Micheal Keating, Ciaran O'Brien and Aoife Finn on defeating Laurel Hill Coláiste in Round 2 of the Concern Debating Competition last Thursday.  We were opposing the motion 'Irish youth are doing their fair share to end poverty and hunger in developing countries'.  The next debate will take place in our school against St. Mary's Charleville, on a date to be confirmed. 
Transition Year Students and staff are currently having a fantastic time in Denmark.  Transition Year Students will have no school on Friday November 18.
Life Saving will resume on Monday November 21.
Mad Hair Day will take place on this Friday November 18, in aid of the Make a Wish Foundation.  Funds will go towards helping children living with life threatening medical conditions.  Cost is €2 per student, which will be collected by Class 5A LCVP Group, who are organising this event. 
Well done to U18½ Hurlers who beat Hospital in the Munster Quarter Final and are now through to the Semi-Final.  Likewise to the 1st Year Boys Soccer Team who beat Shannon Comprehensive 4:3 last Wednesday.
Second part of the Cervical Vaccination will take place on Thursday November 24, for 1st and 6th year girls.  Please ensure you have a breakfast on this morning.
Information Night for Parents/Guardians of our 6th year students will take place on Wednesday November 16 at 8pm in the Demonstration Room.  Mr O’Connor will cover the application procedures for further education, including CAO, UCAS, PLC’s, Apprenticeships, etc.
Parent Teacher Meeting for 6th years will take place on Tuesday November 22 from 4.15pm.
