Kildimo Community Notes W/E Dec 10 2011

Annie Kett, Aged 106

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION:  Albert Einstein was making a name for himself when Annie Kett (nee Hayes) was born in The Glen, Killaloe, Co. Clare in 1905.  At present she is in the care of Thorpe’s Nursing Home, Clarina, where on November 1 she celebrated her 106th birthday.  For many recent years, Annie has lived with and been cared for by her daughter Peg Courtney in Morenane and it was there that she received her Presidential Cheque on her 100 birthday while then still enjoying relatively good health.  She retains a strong allegiance to her Clare birthright, having farmed and reared her three children in Kilkishen following her marriage to John.  She advocated the simple life and hard work allied to a strong religious faith as factors in her longevity.  Like many another Clare person, she had an unfailing admiration for De Valera down the years and an allegiance to his party into modern times.  Her wisdom distilled over a century and more is condensed into one simple maxim of life, namely to “take one day at a time”.   Her family and friends wish her many more such days as she enjoys the tender care bestowed on her in Clarina.

ANNIVERSARIES:  Past and cherished members of our community who will be remembered in church ceremonies include deceased members of the O’Rourke family of Clooncaura and Faha, Jack and Margaret Madigan and Paddy and Mary Hanley.

NATIONAL SCHOOL:  A ‘Food Appeal’ is being organised by the school on behalf of the local branch of the St. Vincent de Paul.  All items of a food nature, such as vouchers and items of food are requested.  The collection point is at the school during working hours.

YOUTH CLUB:  It’s here! ‘Thump Boxing’ has arrived.  It’s the newest, fun, cardiovascular, non-contact boxing workout and the Youth Club are introducing it to our area.  Training is given in the activity and there is no danger to participants/combatants. Watch your kids grow meeker and milder as they take out their aggression on their friends while returning home tired and docile.
PARTY AT SLATTERY’S:  International showman Tommy McCauley leads the party at Slattery’s on Saturday, December 10.  It promises to be a fun night with a visit from Santa and his present partner, along with lots of other festive party games and raffles.  The place to be!

COPSWOOD GAELS RFC:  Our Under 11’s participated in a Blitz at Presentation Pitch in Rathuard battling against harsh weather and a Garryowen team with which they drew 10 all.  This game was hard fought and our lads went in to a very quick lead with our forward pack of Shane Moloney, Tommy Hartigan and Ross Cusack combined to set up David Moloney who powered over
the line. The game was now in full swing and great tackles from Colin Griffin and Jack O'Halloran/Hannifin kept the team in it, then a great move started by a pass from Aaron Corbett saw David Moloney drive over for the second 10 - 0. The second half was a very tough contest and as it was entering its last few minutes our lads took their eyes off the prize and allowed Garryowen in for two tries to even this game up at the death.  A more determined team took on Shannon, resulting in a Copswood 25 to Shannon 5.
Shannon 5, Copsewood 25.  The forward pack was rewarded with two quick tries from Shaun Barry and Liam Griffin together with outstanding play from Tadgh O'Shaughnessy and the ever reliable and dependable John Lillis resulting in Daniel Pearse
shooting over 15 - 0. The second half saw a rally from Shannon who ran in their first score, but with John Lillis putting his body on the line time and again it didn’t take long before Shaun Barry drove over for his second 20 - 5 and with the game fought in the pack our scrum half Jack Mullane shot from the base of a ruck to score a wonderful try and leave us
with a great win.  Well done to all the lads and also to those who trained Sunday morning.
Training continues every Sunday morning 10am to 11am.  Our last session will be on Sunday December 11, before we all take a much-deserved Christmas break.

SANTA COMES:  This most welcome visitor is due at the Seven Sisters Pub on December 18.  Application forms accompanied by a €6 fee should be returned to the National School or the Seven Sisters.  Participants will be entertained by Bobo the Clown and there will be many other fun activities in advance of the arrival of Santa.  You can have a photographic record of the meeting by an accredited photographer to delight your child into old age.  As usual the Youth Club are running the event under supervision.  Enquiries and offers of help to Dermot at 087 9319005.

If you are a walker, a listener, have a sense of fun, enjoy going to the cinema and are willing to partake in individual or group activities, come along and over a cup of tea or coffee you’ll be glad you took that first step.  Enquiries to Seán Gallagher, Brothers of Charity Services Limerick at 061 487086 or 087 9817956.

PALLASKENRY PLAYGROUND FUNDRAISER: Nuala Kavanagh is hosting a ‘Come Dine With Me’ event for the above playground.  A real live past celebrity of the popular show will be a guest at a demonstration of Festive Party Food on Wednesday December 7 in Pallas Community Centre.  If the success and popularity of Nuala’s past demos are anything to go by, you would need to come early and buy your ticket at the door.  You will be greeted with mince pies and mulled wine and the demonstration food will be available at the end of the evening for sampling.  You will also have a chance to win festive spot prizes.

‘A STOLEN BUOY, A STOLEN LIFE’:  Unfortunately, this catchy phrase is lost on those who removed both Lifebuoys from their stations at Ringmoylan Pier.  It costs Limerick Co. Co. dearly to keep replacing such vandalised property annually, but this is nothing to the possible cost of a life that might be spared by such a device.  It seems that like those poor of the Bible “who will always be with us”, mindless vandals are also a perennial blight on society.
