Kildimo Community Notes W/E Jan 21 2012

COMHBHRÓN:  An aura of celebratory sadness suffused the Requiem Mass for the late George Aherne of Old Kildimo and Doolin, Co. Clare.  The chief celebrant on the occasion was Canon John O’Shea, whose knowledge of the deceased and his family greatly personalised the sad event.  Those who knew George were convinced in their tributes to him that his zest for life could not even be dulled by death.  Many of the deceased friends from the area of traditional music and its homeland in Doolin paid him the ultimate tribute by their musical accompaniment of his obsequies.  George was laid to rest beside his father in the graveyard within easy reach of their home on Saturday, January 14.  The large numbers present over the period of the funeral were a tribute to George and his family and a consolation to his grieving mother Mai, his daughter Maura Rose, partner Teresa, his siblings and their extended family.
RECENTLY DECEASED:  The death took place following a battle with illness of Jane Kirby of Castlegrey, Kilcornan.  Jane was daughter of the late and Bess and she is survived by her son John and partner Noel, her brothers and sisters and her extended family.  Her cremation took place in Ringaskiddy Crematorium following Requiem Mass in St. John the Baptist Church, Kilcornan on Friday January 13.

Watch out for the special draw for Valentine’s Day.

KILDIMO ARTIST IN WATERFORD:  Anne McDonnell/Murphy, formerly of Old Kildimo- or ‘Millionaires Row’ as some denizens of the area call it- is making a name for herself in Waterford city.  She has been granted a full centre-fold spread in the ‘Munster Express’ art supplement, outlining her involvement in print-making there.  Anne has returned fulltime to printmaking now that her three children are older.  She transferred to Waterford following her meeting with Martin Murphy from Faithlegg when they both studied at Limerick College of Art and Design.  Her strong talent for drawing is presently put to good use in her print-making work which is allied to her interest in textile design.  Her work may be seen in the ‘Kite Design Studio’, Henrietta Street, which is a space shared by other artists and craftspeople.  Anne’s quality work has brought her to the attention of the Crafts Council of Ireland where she occupies a place on their Education Panel which offers her experience for instructing others.

FREE TRAINING:  West Limerick Resources will be offering a free training programme to community groups who would like to develop their own low cost/no cost website.  The group training initiative will show groups how to develop and maintain their own website using the free on-line resource – Wordpress.  While potential participants will not require any specific web programming knowledge or experience, they must have a sound basic knowledge of computers and be comfortable in the use of the internet, email and simple applications such as Word. Venue and dates to be confirmed.  Those interested in taking part are asked to contact Suzanne on 069 79114 or email srowley@wlr.ie to register.  Limit two participants per community group.

COMMUNITY COUNCIL:  The present community council has secured a valuable asset to the local community with their involvement of the Kemmy Business School of UL.  Students from this facility will be evident around Kildimo when their college opens in the New Year.  Their purpose is to study the local community, its strengths and weaknesses and offer advice on how best local facilities may be developed into the future.  By now you should have been delivered the Community Council Calendar for 2012, which offers an architectural view of the proposed community centre. Mary Conway may be contacted should you require one of these calendars and her number is 087 6521806. The exciting plans for the development of the community site may be seen by contacting Tommy O’Shea.  Some final details regarding site ownership have to be concluded before work on the development commences.  Apart from the multi-purpose community hall, there is included a play area, housing for the elderly, a private housing complex and a recycling area.  The completion of this complex will greatly augment village life and development.  Needless to say, such a boost to village life will not take place without your support, as indeed the community calendar calls you to participate in.  Already support is noted by the many advertisers who have offered assistance in producing the calendar and who in turn deserve your support.  Ní neart gur cuir le céile.

GAA LOTTO:  On January 9, numbers 12, 14, 27 & 28 were drawn for a Jackpot of €20.000.  No member predicted this combination so ‘Lucky Dips’ of €50 each were won by Dylan Hogan, Colm Hartnett, J.
