Kildimo Community Notes W/E May 12 2012

Congratulations to Ciara O'Neill,Court Hill, Kildimo &  Ian Egerton,Mullingar
who were married on Saturday last in St Joseph's Church,Kildimo with reception afterwards in Woodlands House Hotel,Adare.

TAGGED!:  The contest was unequal when the lofty Ian Egerton went in pursuit of the petite Ciara O’Neill in a ‘Tag Rugby’ encounter.  The invention of this game, aimed at ‘fun and enjoyment’ is a clever cover for a dating agency which proved to be a success in the case of the Mullingar software engineer and the HR executive from Kildimo.  The encounter eventually resulted in the matrimonial encounter in St. Joseph’s Church on Saturday May 5 under Ciara’s priestly cousin Joseph Briody from Donegal assisted by Fr. Donworth, P.P.  The Egerton family from Co. Westmeath, numbering six aunts and six uncles of Ian (‘Eggy’) filled the church to capacity with their extended family who returned from afar to celebrate this first wedding of the children of Noel and Ann.  The radiant Bride was assisted by her sisters Sineád and Aoife and her father David made the walk to present his first daughter to enter into a matrimonial commitment.  Eggy had the support of his cousin Paul Egerton as his Bestman and his younger brother Daniel was his Groomsman.  Assisting with the Liturgy of the Word were Laura Egerton who proclaimed the First Reading, while Anthony Briody rendered the Second Reading.  The Prayers of the Faithful were led by friends Catherine Doyle, Karin Hallinan, Vinny Bateman, Jackie Flatley, John Briody and Jeannine Egerton.  Mothers of the newlyweds Mercedes and Ann presented the gifts and the ceremony was greatly enhanced by the music and vocals of Eimear Collins and Valerie Walsh.  Maeve Sheehan read an evocative and thoughtful Communion Reflection in memory of Ian’s and Ciara’s special May event.  Following photographs in the Bride’s family garden, the entourage left for the Woodlands, Adare for the enjoyable reception, enlivened by a dancing display by the Bride and Groom.  The party went on into Sunday evening when the guests mingled over a barbeque. Ian and Ciara will be out of circulation for the next three weeks during which they’ll be cruising out of Florida.  Best wishes from their families and friends for a long and happy life together.

BANTRACHT NA TUAITHE: Members are reminded of the forthcoming ICA annual Sponsored Walk in aid of Breast Cancer research leaving the Adare Heritage Centre car park at 2.30pm on Sunday next, May 13.  The leisurely route will be along the bank of the Maigue from the Church of Ireland to the railway bridge and back to the start for refreshments.  Sensible walking shoes and insurance rainwear advised.
PLATFORM GATHERING:  The venue at Curragh Chase gates has proved a central location for the meeting of several parishes for fun (and sometimes more!) in past times.  At a time in rural Ireland when parishes were often pitted against each other through sport and earlier through faction fighting, the Guerin’s Platform in contrast proved a unifying force for many parishes.  So unifying in fact that many happy marriages began at the cost of a few pennies into Tom Guerin’s cap.  One couple among many, who are still together after more than a half century, began their courtship over a flat bicycle wheel at the gates.  The wife now admits that she left the wind out of her wheel deliberately in order to gain the attention of her beau, a graphic illustration of the fact that enduring relationships can often begin in the most inauspicious circumstances and that feminine wiles are not a modern invention.  While the members of the platform committee cannot guarantee any such results from their forthcoming event on Sunday May 13, they can assure you of a pleasant afternoon of dancing under the lime tree at the crossroads.  If you bring along your children, they may be entertained by face-painting and the catering sub-committee can offer a refreshing cuppa between dances.  Follow the road signs to the venue and proceed with care to parking under the stewards directions

“IN APRIL COME HE WILL”:  And ‘he’ hasn’t let us down.  Braving long distances and challenging weather conditions, the cuckoo has landed.  (My Adare reader will know that his official name is ‘cuculus canorus’.) A local observer in Court, who logs his visits, has noted that the arrival time this year was advanced one day on last years’ arrival.  Some of the traditional pastures around Court obviously favour his annual visits. If you have heard his distinctive call before April 20 when he arrived in Court, let us know. While ‘she’ also arrives, it is of course the ‘he’ that regales us ‘en passant’ while advertising for a mate.  The cuckoo’s call may be confused with the cooing of the dove, but if you are confused about its identity, experts advise that it is not the cuckoo whose distinctive call will not be confused with others.

SALESIAN COLLEGE NEWS:  Showing the fruitful effects of free thinking during Transition Year, four students thinking of the less fortunate have devised a method of teaching sign language through mobile phone app.  ‘Sign4Life’ is the company set up by Coleen Mullane (Director), Ciara Reidy, Caoimhe O’Neill and Fiona Mangan.  The girls carried off first prize over opposition from two thousand other contestants in the ‘Junior Achievement Company of the Year’ competition.  When representatives from the Limerick School of  the Deaf made a presentation to the students, the young entrepreneurs took up the cause and using video technology they produced their teaching system which is available for download as ‘Irish Sign Language App’ for €4.49.  Profits from sales will benefit the local school for the deaf as well as building the bridge from the hearing community to those aurally challenged.

GAA LOTTO:  On April 30, numbers 6, 8, 15 & 22 were drawn for a Jackpot of €20.000.  No member predicted this combination so ‘Lucky Dips’ of €50 each were drawn by Tom Martin, Bernie Nolan, John Martin and J. Fitzgerald.
DECEASED:  The death took place of centenarian Mrs Nora Kenneally (nee Carmody) at her home in St. Mary’s Terrace, Askeaton.  She is survived by her daughter and sons and an extended family.  Her internment took place following Requiem Mass in St. Mary’s Church to Reilig Mhuire on Monday May 7.  Ar dheis Dé to raibh a h-anam dilis.

YOUTH CLUB:  The present season is coming to a close under leaders Dermot Mullane, Tríona Griffin and Cathy O’Sullivan.  They will shepherd a large group of members to Thomond Park this weekend and the last meeting will be an energetic visit to Kilfinnane Outdoor Education Centre.  This club like so many others depends upon dedicated leaders like those above, but unfortunately the large youth membership also needs a large group of leaders to sustain the activities of the club.  The three present members are not adequate to continue activities into a new season, given the present statutory requirements vis-à-vis ratio of members to leaders.  It would be a great misfortune if the club ceased because of this dearth of leaders.  Maybe you can give some of your time?  Contact any of  the above if you want this great youth facility to continue.

COMMUNITY LOTTO:  ‘Jackpot Numbers’ drawn on May 1, for a Jackpot of €11,050 were 6, 9, 13 & 16.   No member predicted this combination so ‘Lucky Dips’ of €20 each were drawn by Martin Hogan, Cardine O’Connell, John McMahon, Elizabeth Hickey and Tom & Tara Lyons.

RECESSION BUSTER: Get yourself out of recession by starting your own business.  Help is on hand in the form of a Start-up business course that will begin in N.C.W. Desmond Complex on May 19 and May 26.  West Limerick citizens are offered the course free and it runs from 9.30 to 1.30 on the above dates.  You must register in advance by contacting Morgan on 069 66290 or e-mail mboohan@wlr.ie.
