Kildimo Community Notes W/E May 5 2012

Kenry Historical Soc.Visits to Castles on the Maigue

RECENT ANNIVERSARIES:  Past members of our local community who will be remembered in church services this weekend include, Jo Goggin and Patsy Hayes.

COMMUNITY COUNCIL NEWS:  The two studies recently presented to members of the Community Council and shortly to be made available to interested parties, concentrated largely on the potential of the creamery site for future development.  The students gave consideration to the sporting facilities that are available locally and thought that the creamery area could provide a unique sporting facility if developed into an ‘all-weather’ pitch and the buildings converted into use as hostel accommodation for sporting enthusiasts who would use the pitch.  The study group are of the opinion that facilities for a ‘7’s Tournament’ are generally lacking and that the above development would cater for such a niche in the market.  A survey by the students found a very positive response to the idea of hostel accommodation and adjacent sporting facilities.  They also noted the proximity of the lakes and their potential for adventures sports, something already recognised by the sports body in Copswood College.  The facilities at Bleach Lough for trout fishing might also benefit from a hostel in the village to supplement the already available bed and breakfast accommodation.  The full reports are comprehensive and deserving of close study and these will be made available by contacting Tommy O’Shea or Mary Conway.

KILDIMO ON TOUR:  A delegation from the area made contact with one of our ‘emigrants’ to Waterford recently while touring Ireland’s oldest city.  Anne McDonnell, formerly of Old Kildimo and now living in Faithlegg near Waterford, is conducting her artistic interests in the ‘Kite Gallery’ on that city’s ‘Viking Triangle’.  It was gratifying to note that Anne’s work still shows her origins on the Maigue with many works reflecting
this.  The ‘Kite Gallery’ is a vibrant mix of art and craft workers who clearly influence each other and Anne’s artistic qualities are reflected in collaboration with a local silversmith in the production of very unique one-off jewellery.  Her main output at present is through the medium of printmaking and local Limerick scenes feature in that corpus.  She is very capable of taking commissions and local clubs in need of presentations might remember our ‘local’ artist whose works are unique and very affordable.  Anne is at 051 382940 or printmaker@eircom.net.

KENRY HISTORICAL SOCIETY:  Derek Cahill led a very interesting tour of historical sites on the banks of the Maigue on Sunday, April 29.  He uncovered hidden chapters of our history such as the swivel wooden bridge that once formed part of the Ferry Bridge.  This was to allow masted boats that brought turf from Clare up as far as the Quay in Adare.  He also pointed out remnants of the canal that operated on the east side of the river.  The site of an early castle on the same side that was on the high ground south of the present N69, can now only vaguely be pointed to, the stones of which may have gone into the building of the Ferry Bridge.  The history of the now destroyed Cullum Castle on the west bank of the river was described after which the tour took in Court Castle on the Fitzgerald farm.  On the Guinane farm in Ballyculhane, the history enthusiasts were treated to a tour of the many interesting features of the Purcell Castle that had a bloody past under Cromwellian forces.  Derek’s erudition animated many responses from the locals, all of whom had interesting historical and folkloric items to add and which made for a very enjoyable afternoon in brilliant sunshine.  The group and their friends are looking forward to the next local Kenry tour scheduled to take place in a month’s time under the guidance of John Nash who will lead a tour of his local Kilbreedy.

SEMINAR ON AGEING
Ageing is a fact of life but most of us do not like to think about the realities of ageing. What is it like to grow old in a rural community today and what might it be like in the coming years? How can we create a better, fairer prospect for our older people today and for all of us who will grow old here, in County Limerick? On Wednesday May 2, at 7.30 p.m., the Community and Voluntary Forum hosts a seminar at Rathkeale House Hotel called ‘Rural Ageing and Social Exclusion: Planning for All our Futures’. Dr. Kieran Walshe from the Irish Centre for Social Gerontology, NUI Galway, will discuss findings and recommendations from his recent cross-border research into the nature of rural ageing and social exclusion. Ms Patricia Conboy, National Director of Older & Bolder (O&B) will give insight into issues on ageing from a human rights perspective and highlight the campaign work being done by O&B to influence national ageing strategy. Dr Samantha Ronan Ballinacarriga, senior case worker for Elder Abuse with the HSE, will talk on the sensitive issue of Elder Abuse
.All welcome.

COMMUNITY LOTTO:  ‘Jackpot Numbers’ drawn on April 24, for a Jackpot of €11,000 were 6, 7, 8 & 18.   No member predicted this combination so ‘Lucky Dips’ of €20 each were drawn by Karen Staff, Michael Coughlan, Kitty Sexton, Rose McKeogh and Caroline O’Connell.

GAA LOTTO:  On April 23, numbers 13, 16, 19 & 28 were drawn for a Jackpot of €20.000.  No member predicted this combination so ‘Lucky Dips’ of €50 each were drawn by D & M O’Brien, Niamh Deely, Rosario Shanahan and Mary O’Callaghan.

“IN APRIL COME HE WILL”:  And ‘he’ hasn’t let us down.  Braving long distances and challenging weather conditions, the cuckoo has landed.  (My Adare reader will know that his official name is ‘cuculus canorus’.) A local observer in Court, who logs his visits, has noted that the arrival time this year was advanced one day on last years’ arrival.  Some of the traditional pastures around Court obviously favour his annual visits. If you have heard his distinctive call before April 20 when he arrived in Court, let us know. While ‘she’ also arrives, it is of course the ‘he’ that regales us ‘en passant’ while advertising for a mate. The cuckoo’s call may be confused with the cooing of the dove, but if you are confused about its identity, experts advise that it is not the cuckoo whose distinctive call will not be confused with others.

BOXERCISE: Classes continue every Tuesday evening in Pallaskenry Community Hall
7 to 8 pm, Further information from John at (087) 9115411.
