TIDY TOWNS: The Committee has received grant approval from the Rural Development Programme 2007-13 to landscape the new green areas at Slattery’s Corner. Work will be carried out in phases to allow for planting in the appropriate season and it is hoped to commence in the next couple of weeks. You may have noted that the street displays need renewing and if you wish to donate flowering annuals they will be gratefully received. The efforts of business people in beautifying their own premises with summer planting greatly adds to the visual impact of the village and towards lessening the work of the hardworking members of the Tidy Towns group. Kildimo is now entered for judging in the ‘Limerick in Bloom’ competition which is judged over the summer months. Litter picking continues regularly- by at least Mary O’Brolcháin- and your help will be greatly appreciated.

FUNDRAISING 120 YEARS AGO: The local correspondent for the Munster News- a Cork-based newspaper of the time, had difficulty containing his delight at the concert in Pallaskenry on April 28 1881, in the newspaper report on May 4. The audience were ‘rapt from beginning to end’, even to the extent of ‘ecstasy’. This wonderful event was in aid of Pallaskenry Clothing Club, a charitable organisation aimed at clothing the ‘poorer classes’ to assist in their attendance at school. Miss Griffin, President of the Club, expressed herself well-satisfied at the pecuniary result of the concert. The cast for the event came from the houses of the gentry with a sprinkling of prestigious local residents. The Hon Mr and Mrs Pery gave unstintingly of their talent in recitation and song. Miss Croker from Ballynagarde opened the proceedings with ‘a charming piano solo’ and the Misses Westropp, White, Fosbery, Massy and Griffin sisters had the audience stuck to their seats and baying for more. ‘Exquisite sweetness and humour’ was how Mrs Alexander Caulfeild rendered ‘Robin is Shy’. Mr Joseph Mulqueen recited ‘The Charge of the Light Brigade’ with ‘inspiring force and cultivated skill’ and his sister Teresa was not to be outdone in singing ‘The Blind Girl to her Harp’, with ‘refined taste’. But surely it was the Hon H De Vere Pery who stole the show with his ‘The Old Bog Hole’, because the reporter was nearly rendered speechless with blood vessels in danger of bursting and sides in danger of splitting. Just as well the concert had to end as the audience were all so carried away with delight that there was a danger that they would have to be carried away for medical treatment with the heightened state of excitement caused by the event.
COMMUNITY LOTTO: ‘Jackpot Numbers’ drawn on June 6, for a Jackpot of €11,300 were 3, 11, 15 & 23. No member predicted this combination so ‘Lucky Dips’ of €20 each were drawn by Marie O’Shea, Josephine O’Dea, Peggy Gleeson and Lucy, Robert and Molly.
