GAA LOTTO: Jackpot! The €20,000 jackpot finally landed in the draw on June 12. Worthy winner is Kieran McMahon of the family hurling dynasty well-founded on the shoulders of his grandfather Tommy and grand uncle Paddy.
GUN CLUB: The local gun club is currently enrolling new members from the Kildimo area. This club has been in operation for over fifty years and has good basic memberships that annually rear their own pheasant for the hunting period from November 1 to January 3. Migratory woodcock are also hunted by club members within the parish district bounds and with the compliance of local landowners. Shooting is confined to weekends within the designated time. Membership is open to over sixteen year olds, who for their first year hunt under the supervision of senior members. KENRY HISTORY SOCIETY: Members and friends will meet at Kilcornan Church Carpark on Sunday next June 24 at 3.00 pm. You’ll enjoy the tour of Kilbreedy under the direction of local man John Nash who has an unrivalled interest and knowledge of his local place.
BANTRACHT NA TUAITHE: Kildimo ICA ladies will celebrate their independence on the appropriate day Wednesday July 4. An outing to Cobh taking in The Titanic Exhibition is planned and both members & non members are welcome to join what in what promises to be a good day out. VISIT KNOCKFIERNA: The annual ‘Bonfire Night’ will be celebrated at the Rambling House on the hill on the evening of Saturday, June 23. The evening will end with a presentation of nostalgic gramophone music. The following day a walk will be conducted from the same venue at 7.30 pm, following which there will be entertainment through music, song and story. As usual all are welcome and visiting is greatly facilitated by the wonderfully developed approach road and parking facilities at the Rambling House.
COMMUNITY LOTTO: ‘Jackpot Numbers’ drawn on June 12, for a Jackpot of €11,350 were 6, 15, 18 & 27. As no punter predicted this combination, ‘Lucky Dips’ of €20 each were drawn by Mary Rogan, Paddy Kelly, Jim Conway and Sarah O’Dea.
POSTCARD COMPETITION: A reminder to keep up working on the picture of Kildimo that you think would best illustrate our place for visitors. Any paint medium on an A4 size or smaller are eligible, accompanied by a €5 entry fee will qualify. The winning entry will be reduced to postcard size and a limited print run will be made available for sale locally. All local amateur artists are invited to submit an entry.
BIRDWATCH: An outing for members is scheduled for Sunday July 8 to the Dromada Hills in Athea. Meeting opposite Athea National School at 9.00 am, you are advised to wear warm clothing and strong footwear. Geoff Hunt will lead the event and it is hoped to encounter the elusive Cuckoo, Raven, Red Grouse, Skylark, Reed Bunting, Merlin and Hen Harrier. DIGITAL TV SWITCHOVER: Those currently receiving their TV signal from an aerial will now be seeing a caption on their screen saying “24 October”. This means that unless you take action you will no longer receive a television signal after October 24, 2012. West Limerick Resources are currently operating the Community Outreach Digital Switchover Programme and are asking for your help to identify those locally who will need a little assistance and make sure that they get it including older people living alone, those with literacy and other learning difficulties and those with few social networks. A ‘Reach Out and Switch Over’ Week will run nationally from June 25 to July 1. Communities interested in holding events in the West Limerick area to help raise awareness of the Switchover as well as individuals who would like to volunteer their time to help in the effort are asked to contact Clint on 069 62222 or email csexton@wlr.ie
REACHING OUT: West Limerick Resources are delighted to announce that John Joe Conwell from Ireland Reaching out Headquarters will hold an information session on Thursday June 28 in the Rathkeale House Hotel at 7.30pm. Offering an opportunity for individuals and communities to learn how they can get involved and benefit from the initiative, the event is free of charge and open to all. Ireland Reaching Out is an Irish government sponsored initiative established to connect people of Irish heritage abroad with the parish where their ancestors originated from Ireland. It will offer local parish communities an extraordinary opportunity to extend the numbers of people committed to their parish by inviting its own Diaspora worldwide to become involved in their place of origin.
