CHILDREN’S ART CAMP: Cathy O’Sullivan local art tutor is holding a ‘Kids Art Camp’ at the Kildimo GAA clubhouse in August. The course will run from Tuesday August 7 to the following Friday inclusive and from 10 am to 2. 00 pm for a fee of €50. Enquiries to Cathy at 086 6038288.
ART EXHIBITION: ‘De Bucket’ is presently hosting an art exhibition from the Clarina ‘Thursday Club’. The paintings are very affordable and will grace any living space.
BOLANE BEND: The long-awaited work on relieving the dangerous bend at Bolane has begun. This major undertaking is the result of local lobbying and its effect on the County Council roads department in taking up the cause. Preliminary archaeological work has been going on in the pathway of the new road configuration for some weeks past in preparation for the development. Not standing idly by, other local road projects will be the subject of a deputation to the National Roads Authority by interested councillors and others to National headquarters in Dublin on Tuesday July 17. Citizens should always be aware that they are the eyes and ears of the community and their opinions in regard to road safety and other issues are always worthy of airing to local authorities.
BANTRACHT NA TUAITHE: Never ones to let the grass grow under their feet a large group of ICA ladies from Limerick have just returned from An Grianán with fulsome praise for its hospitality and excellent courses on offer. Limerick lace was very popular as was digital photography and painting. No need to feel downhearted as bookings are still open for a further group from Limerick in November for both ICA members and non members.
COMMUNITY LOTTO: ‘Jackpot Numbers’ drawn on July 10, for a Jackpot of €11,550 were 5, 9, 11 & 16. We have a winner! Congratulations to Martin O’Dea of ‘De Bucket’ who predicted the winning combination which netted him a handsome Jackpot and Mary has plans for spending it on the celebration of Tipperary’s next All Ireland win, by which time it should have gathered much interest.
GAA LOTTO: The new Jackpot is now €2,700 and the numbers drawn on Monday July 9 were 3, 5, 6 & 13. As no member predicted this combination, €50 Lucky Dips were drawn by Maura Aherne, John Gleeson, Gerry O’Dwyer and Karen, Rebecca and Emma..
WALK OR PUSHED: This was the dilemma facing a tribunal about an incident in Blossomhill, Pallaskenry in which a heifer was found drowned in a bog hole. The proceedings were brought up in a letter from ‘a ratepayer’ to the Munster News on January 9, 1884. The owner of this animal had bought it only recently for fifty shillings in an ‘emaciated condition’, coming as it did from mountainy south Kerry. It’s owner who was suing for compensation- that would be paid for from the common purse- alleged that it had been pushed into the bog hole, hence validating his claim for compensation. The claimant was a Mr Norris and he was a tenant on the lands of Rev John Thomas Waller, previously lands of Mr Potter. It was the Hon Mr De Vere Perry’s evidence that saved the ratepayers from shelling out the compensation to the satisfaction of Mr W E Counihan, Solicitor for the ratepayers. Mr Norris’s case was heavily dependent on two ash plants that were found near the scene of the alleged crime. The intensive police investigation into the case established an altogether innocent reason for these cudgels and the letter-writer professed himself happy that enough money of the ‘unfortunate ratepayers’ had already been expended on the case, ‘hundreds of pounds’ he wrote. A warning against spurious compensation claims!
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO HELP RAISE AWARENESS OF DIGITAL SWITCH:
West Limerick Resources is now seeking volunteers to help raise awareness of the switch to digital television which take place on October 24. Help is needed to identify older people living alone, those with literacy and other learning difficulties and those with few social networks who may to be aware of the change or who may need basic information on how to make the switch. The Community Outreach Digital Switchover Programme is heavily reliant on the Irish tradition of caring for our neighbours and we are asking communities to look around and help identify those locally who will need a little assistance and make sure that they get it. For further information contact Clint at West Limerick Resources on 069 62222.
IRISH CANCER SOCIETY: A fundraiser Céilí will be held in Knockaderry Community Centre on Sunday July 29 2012 from 4pm to 7pm. Music by The Striohalan Céilí Band
