WELCOME HOME: It is good to report the return home from hospital of Davy Watts of Ballynacarriga and Peggy O’Rourke of the Post Office. They both look fit and well following their treatment and will enjoy full recovery in the healthiest place to be, in their own homes.
SYMPATHY: Liam Meade of Kilcornan is the recipient of much sympathy from his friends and parishioners on the unexpected death of his wife Bernadette. The funeral Mass of the late Mrs Meade was celebrated on Saturday July 21 by Fr. Michael Murphy and concelebrants, following which internment took place to the local cemetery.

KNOCKFIERNA: A festival without Booze is how the Knockfierna Heritage Society is announcing their Lughnasa Celebration on the weekend of July 28. The many traditional events hosted by this society in the past are ample proof that this aspiration is not fanciful. The hilltop on Knockfierna has been the site for such festivals for longer than recorded history. The gathering takes place at 7.00 pm with a walk from the Rambling House to which the party will return for a traditional evening of craic. The winning formula will b e repeated on the following Sunday evening at the same time. If you have any enquiries regarding these events the organisers are available on 087 9977340 and 087 9741387.
COMMUNITY LOTTO: There was no draw last week as the coffers were searched for the new Jackpot. The new series of Draws will commence on Tuesday July 24 and your continued support is solicited to keep local development of community resources on track.
GAA LOTTO: The new Jackpot is now €3.000 and the numbers drawn on Monday July 16 were 1, 3, 11 & 25. As no member predicted this combination, €50 Lucky Dips were drawn by Olive Fitzgerald, The Two Joes, Maura Aherne and Bart & Ann Moylan.
FR MCCORMACK, SDB: Back in Ireland from his ministry in Swaziland, Fr Martin was a guest on Weeshie Fogarty’s ‘Kerry Radio’ on Wednesday, July 18. Athletics was the theme of the programme and especially Martin’s coaching of two athletes from Swaziland that were to participate in the London Olympics. Unfortunately one of these will not take part due to her rather gruesome murder in her home area, she being only sixteen years of age. Her dismembered remains were found in the bush, possibly indicating a ritual killing which is part of the culture of that place. The young girl had achieved three gold medals and would have been a bright hope to win a medal in London before her untimely death. Fr Martin has taken up the cause of the remaining children of the girl’s family and has committed himself to their education. For this cause he has written a song, ‘A Child of Swaziland’ which will be the theme of a disk that will be launched shortly, featuring songs from his native place in Ballydesmond and his adopted ‘home’ in Africa. No mountain is too high for Martin to climb as he says, and his many projects in the Salesian Mission abroad will have his full support. He pointed out the futility of preaching to empty stomachs and sufferers from Aids and his many projects like employment schemes, care of the sick, education and athletics training are all aimed at raising the people from poverty and thus effecting a practical lesson in spreading the Gospel. In order to further enhance his role in this regard Fr Martin is taking time out to improve his own ability to deliver his Salesian ethos by a year of study in pastoral studies. Donations to the many projects espoused by Fr Martin may be made through his web site, The Moses Foundation.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO HELP RAISE AWARENESS OF DIGITAL SWITCH:
West Limerick Resources is now seeking volunteers to help raise awareness of the switch to digital television which take place on October 24. Help is needed to identify older people living alone, those with literacy and other learning difficulties and those with few social networks who may to be aware of the change or who may need basic information on how to make the switch. The Community Outreach Digital Switchover Programme is heavily reliant on the Irish tradition of caring for our neighbours and we are asking communities to look around and help identify those locally who will need a little assistance and make sure that they get it. For further information contact Clint at West Limerick Resources on 069 62222.
