Kildimo Community Notes W/E August 18 2012

COMHBHRÓN: The celebratory Requiem Mass was concelebrated for the late Jim McDonnell, formerly of Kilmoreen on Saturday August 11 at 12.00 pm.  Friends from his seminary days were the celebrants with chief celebrant Canon John O’Shea of Abbeyfeale parish.  All spoke highly of their friend who gave dedicated service as a social worker in the US.  His death took place on June 1 in Charlotte where he lived with his wife Anne and where they raised their sons James and Robert and daughter Kathryn, to whom sympathy is extended.  He is survived by his brother Tom, sister in law Meta and their extended families.  Internment of his ashes took place to Kilbradren cemetery, Ardagh, the ancestral burial ground where he joins his parents Thomas and Hannah to await the Resurrection.
May he rest in Peace.

HERITAGE WEEK: Saturday August 18 ushers in the beginning of our annual celebration of heritage.  Most of these events are free and County Limerick offers many diverse events such as an introduction to the Foynes Flying Boat Museum archive-  that’s on the Tuesday and Thursday of the week, from 2.30 pm.  The ‘Event Guide’ booklet, features lots of events centered on Knockfierna and the Rambling House there.  Go no further than Askeaton for a most interesting exhibition collated by a local historian on the Titanic disaster and featuring interesting facts related to natives of that area and the fated voyage.  Also on offer there is a tour of the Desmond Castle and Friary by the irrepressible local historian Anthony Sheehy.  If your interest is ‘Stone-crushing’, take yourself to Barnagh and stand well back on Sunday 26 when the action takes place!  Kilmallock, Kilcolman, Cappamore and Castleconnell are all featuring events and if you travel no further than the late Jack Goggin’s cottage, you’ll be impressed by the standard of restoration undertaken by the ‘Landmark Trust’ who in the process are also restoring Jack’s open hospitality on Sunday August 26 from 1.00 pm and in the future for holiday lettings.  The ‘Events’ Booklet is a must for details and this is available from libraries and tourist offices.

THE GATHERING 2013:  The idea of ‘The Gathering’ has already been launched in Limerick and the steering committee has been brain-storming in relation to this grassroots initiative to ‘light up’ our communities by connecting to our people abroad.  Sport will make these connections in a vital way by inviting like-minded sports people to join their community events.  Family gatherings of clans and clan sub-septs always prove a popular attraction for those overseas who may have separated from the parent body.  County Limerick has many strong and notable family groups that could benefit from making the connection with the diaspora abroad.  Club meetings locally might give consideration to this and perhaps elect working committees to do their own brainstorming with a view to enhancing the circuit of contacts and expanding the areas of ‘lighting up’.

CURRAGH CHASE:  The big event of the 10K Walk/Run is staked out from the Kilcornan Community Centre and through the estate on Sunday 19.  On the same day Coillte are also launching their new initiative of volunteer Park Rangers, who will be on hand on the same day to meet and greet and direct visitors along the particular paths that may interest particular visitors.  The Rangers will also have a supervisory role in monitoring the numbers and activities of users of the park.  In this connection the very limited ‘abusers’ of the facility will also be noted, such as those who damage the area’s amenities and who leave more than their footprint after them.  The newly-formed Rangers will be noticeable by their distinctive bibs and will be glad to take questions and possible suggestions regarding this great local amenity.

FUNDRAISING:  Bernadette and Tony Hackett of Ballyshonick wish to thank all those who supported their recent ‘Afternoon Tea’ fundraiser for the poor of Zwelishe in South Africa.  This impoverished township benefits from the Hackett’s fundraising locally and all proceeds will go directly into the fund to provide ‘Bags of Love’, that is food hampers for Christmas.     Enquiries from Bernadette on 061 393637/087 7092671.

GRAVEYARD MASSES:  Mass will be celebrated by Fr John Donworth PP in Kildimo graveyard on Friday August 17 at 7.30pm. Please inform relatives and friends outside the parish of these arrangements

SCRAP IT!:  There’s money in metal and the Community Council wants yours.  Any recyclable metal will be collected on Saturday September 1, at the Carpark in the village centre near the cross from 8.30 am to 12.30 pm.  A great opportunity to get rid of those old motor parts and bicycles that will never run again, in fact “Any ole iron”

ORATION AT THE GRAVE OF O’DONOVAN ROSSA:  There is a unique opportunity to re-live the famous and stirring oration delivered by Pádraig Pearse at the grave in Glasnevin during the month of August.  Daily at 2.30 pm, an actor in the uniform of the Volunteers gives the oration and even nearly a century later, the speech crafted and delivered by Pearse can still stir the heart as it did those of the thousands who thronged the cemetery on the fateful day, August 1 1915. This is available to all-comers for free and you may also wish to avail of the visit to join one of the official (fee-paying) tours of this historic graveyard founded by its most illustrious occupant, Daniel O’Connell.  A very notable grave memorial placed on the perimeter circle of the O’Connell monument marks the resting place of the prestigious Dublin builder Michael Meade along with his wife and sons, is also worth noting.  This family, who came to fame in the capital through the high standard of its company’s building prowess, came from Kilbreedy where the ruins of their ancestral cottage may still be seen and on which subject John Naish of Kilbreedy is the local expert.

BANTRACHT NA TUAITHE: It was very fitting at the last Killulta ICA Book Club meeting in‘De Bucket’ Pub, Ferrybridge last week that the late Maeve Binchy ,who was a
Firm favourite with the group ,was fondly remembered. When her last book ‘A Week in Winter’ is finally published, probably later this year, it is quite likely that this will be discussed. In the meantime the chosen book for the October meeting is ‘The Seven Secrets of Happiness’ by Sharon Owens.

GAA LOTTO:  The new Jackpot is now €3.200 and the numbers drawn on Monday August 7 were 4, 5, 7 & 27.  As no member predicted this combination, €50 Lucky Dips were drawn by Val Nolan, Ardagh; Deirdre O’Brien, Glenameade; Vera O’Donnell, Ballyrune and Patrick Maher.
