Kildimo Community Notes W/E October 20 2012



COMHBHRÓN: Sympathy is extended to Mags Griffin (O’Brien), Faha, Kildimo on the death of her father Gerry O'Brien, High Street, Croom.  His funeral took place to Reilig Mhuire on Friday October 12 following Requiem Mass in St. Mary’s Church, Croom.  He is also survived by his wife Nellie, son Gerard and his other daughters Helen and Martine, extended family and friends.


ANNIVERSARIES:  Mass will be celebrated on Sunday October 21 in memory of the late Tom Kelly.  On Thursday and Friday, November 1 & 2 at 7.00 pm, in Kildimo and Pallaskenry respectively, Mass will be celebrated to commemorate those who died in the past year.

COMMUNITY COUNCIL NEWS:  The tireless members of the Community Council are presently engaged in preparing the local ‘Parish Calendar 2013’.  Always a useful document to have at hand for important events and local business contact details. CALLING THE O’BRIENS:  Even if you are not a member of this noble family, you may still be interested in a new series of lectures on Brian, the illustrious head of the clan.  These take place on Tuesday evenings at Killaloe’s St Flannan’s Cathedral and are presented on behalf of the Thomond Historical and Archaeological Society by Dr Cathy Swift of Mary Immaculate College.  The O’Brien ‘Family Background’ is the subject of the first lecture which begins on October 23.
COMMUNITY GAMES:  On Monday October 22, the AGM of the Kildimo/Pallaskenry Community Games takes place in Pallas Community Centre.  The success of this cradle of sporting endeavour depends greatly upon those who volunteer their time and energy into the organisation and its activities.  This usually means the participation of the parents of the children who participate in the many sports.  All parents are encouraged to attend this important meeting and learn about and plan the coming year’s activities.  Maeve Galvin is available at 087 2517080 to answer all your queries.  “Ní neart go cur le céile”.

‘THE GATHERING’:  Following the very successful meeting on this subject last month in Adare, a follow-up meeting is being held in The Strand Hotel, Limerick on Tuesday October 23, from 7.00 to 9.00 pm.  Those who couldn’t attend the Adare meeting are especially invited where they can be brought up to date on plans offer their own input into the coming events. BANTRACHT NA TUAITHE: A poetry workshop is arranged for Saturday October 20 in Abbeyfeale with facilitator Mary Stenson Shanahan.This workshop is for persons who have never written creatively but equally for those who have some experience already. It will use a highly interactive and ‘hands on’ approach. The cost is €15 which includes light refreshments.  Bookings may be made with Rita at 086 3738626.
KENRY HISTORY SOCIETY:  Lorna Shier is the speaker on Wednesday October 17 at the Community Centre, Kilcornan.  The history society dedicated to fostering the history of  the Barony of Kenry, has a policy of circulating its events around all parts of the historic area, hence the location in Kilcornan of this talk on ‘The Palatines’.  Be there at 8.00 pm and you’ll be welcome!


WOMEN’S MINI MARATHON:  A fit female foursome from the north side joined the Marathon from U.L on Sunday October 14.   Margaret Fitzgerald, Julie Fitzgerald, Marian Mulhall and Rosario Harte have been doing this mini-marathon for many years and in the process donating their sponsorship to ‘Cystic Fibrosis. 



WHAT’S COOKING: The new ICA Cookbook, which is full of unique family recipes, will be in the shops very shortly. All situations are catered for and recipes have been tried and tested under the watchful eye of An Grianán cookery demonstrator and food writer Marie McGuirk. The recipes featured have been chosen from submissions of various ICA members including Limerick and would be an ideal present for both experienced and new cooks. The RRP is €22.99 or if ordered through your local ICA guild the cost will be less. Next Saturday’s Irish Times will include an insert of a mini ICA cookbook which is eagerly awaited.


GAA LOTTO:  The new Jackpot is now €4,200 and the numbers drawn on Monday October 8 were 1, 14, 17 & 25.  As no member predicted this combination, €50 Lucky Dips were drawn by Catríona Dore, Tommy McCarthy, Stephen Ryan & Tony Gibney.
