COMHBHRÓN:  Sympathy is extended to the Griffin family of Old Kildimo on the recent death of their cousin Sean of Whitehall in Dublin.  He is survived by his wife Mary (nee Cooney), mother Mary, daughter Emma and other relatives.  The funeral took place to Glasnevin Crematorium on Thursday October 4, following service in Christ Church Cathedral.

ART EXHIBITION:  Local artist Pauline Fitzgerald of Kilmacat is showing her recent works in the Gallery in Scariff Library, Co Clare.  You have until October 31 to view and buy and the Gallery is open during Library hours from Monday to Saturday.  The exhibits are on silk and illustrate Pauline’s professional interest in Textile Design before her retirement from Limerick College of Art.  The exhibition is entitled ‘Ornamento’ which suggests the influence of Italian classical art on some of the works.  The other influence of ancient stone carving is also evident which is not surprising given the rich heritage of early carving in her native Fermanagh.
Bantracht Na Tuaithe: A poetry workshop is being arranged on Saturday October 20 in Abbeyfeale with facilitator Mary Stenson Shanahan. This workshop is for persons who have never written creatively but equally for those who have some experience already. It will use a highly interactive and hands on approach The cost is €20 which includes light refreshments and bookings may be made with Rita at 086 3738626.

‘RAMBLING HOUSE’:  As a fundraiser towards their forthcoming annual tour of Britain, the rambling house will hold a concert in St. John’s Arts Centre, Listowel on Sunday night, October 14.  Long before   ‘The Gathering’ was ever thought about, the annual tour to bring Ireland to emigrants in Britain, has proved a popular and powerful force in ‘gathering’ together our people abroad.  Their visits to centres in England, such as Birmingham, Harringay, Harrow and Derby, are much looked forward to by patrons of Irish music and dance.  The annual tour is funded by generous patrons and supporters and your attendance in Listowel will do much to ensure the continuation of these tours.  Our own Doris Shire (Costello) is one of the most constant artists to feature on the tours, when her sweet tones and native ballads swell the hearts of her listeners with native Irish pride.  If you can’t make it to hear her in person, her recordings are available on disc from her home in Rathmale, Mungret.  They will make a unique Christmas present for anyone at home or abroad.  Included in her repertoire is the only known commercial recording of Kildimo’s own ballad, variously called ‘The Boys of the Line’ or ‘That Old Home Town of Mine’.  Tell your friends in England about the tour to the above centres that takes place over the first weekend of November.

YOGA: The ‘Seven Sisters’ is the venue for this new series of classes where you will discover new muscles and postures on Wednesday  evenings from 7.00 to 8.00 pm. Any further information Contact 0868551853

KENRY HISTORY SOCIETY:  Your local history society is hosting a lecture on the Palatines in Limerick.  This will be delivered by a descendant of the original group of German-speaking immigrants who came to Co. Limerick in 1709 during the time of Queen Ann of England.  The unsettled political atmosphere at the time allied to poor harvests of their vineyards, acted as further inducements to leave their homelands on the Rhine.    The lecturer Lorna Shier has made a study of her Palatine ancestry as part of her Masters Degree in History of Family at UL, and is therefore doubly qualified to speak with authority on the subject.  The venue for this event is in the Community Hall in Kilcornan as the policy of the history society is to deliver its lectures in the various parts of Kenry, just as they conduct their historical tours around the Barony.  The date and time is on Wednesday October 17 at 8.00 pm.  As usual members and their friends are welcome and a small contribution is suggested to cover the cost of the event.

SALESIAN COLLEGE NEWS: The annual Danish Student Exchange commenced on Saturday, October 5 and the students will be staying with families locally.  While here they will visit places in Limerick, Kerry and Clare and will take great interest in the historical remains left by those Danes who were not so enthusiastically embraced when they came many centuries before.  Advice circulated to these visitors in the ninth century cautioned them to look around the doorway before you entered for your visit might not be fully appreciated.  Times have changed!

WOMEN’S MINI MARATHON:  A fit female foursome from the north side will join the Marathon from U.L on Sunday October 14.   Margaret Fitzgerald, Julie Fitzgerald, Marian Mulhall and Rosario Harte have been doing this mini-marathon for many years and in the process donating their sponsorship to ‘Cystic Fibrosis.

GAA CELEBRATION:  Ten years on since the Junior Team won the championship, there will be a get-together of the Kildimo team and supporters at the Seven Sisters on Saturday October 13.  Be in your seats for the 8.30 start of the video of the match, following which Tommy McCauley will entertain the masses.  €10 will get you in and a DVD will be available of the historic occasion with all funds going towards the club.

KILDIMO ICA: extends its sincere thanks to all who supported their recent fundraiser
towards holding Wellness Workshops to empower persons to manage their own mental health .and to identify how they can support anyone with difficulties. The amount raised was almost €240 with more subscriptions pledged. Your support was much appreciated.
