MUNGRET HERITAGE:  The Mungret Heritage Society continues their interesting series of lectures on the historical riches of that area.  On Wednesday November 7 local Clarina man Dr Matthew Potter will deliver his lecture on the theme of ‘Mungret Medieval and Modern’.  On Wednesday November 14, the subject of the lecture is ‘Recent Archaeological Discoveries in Mungret’.  The venue for all these free events- with tea included! - is St Nessan’s National School. All are welcome.

IMPORTANT PUBLISHING EVENT:  If you missed the first edition of the late John Sheehan’s important work, ‘A Corner of Limerick’, then you’re in for a treat.  The ‘Corner’ in question is that area of land east of the Maigue, namely Clarina/Balllybrown.  In spite of the fact that the neighbours to the west in Kenry have had some celebrated conflicts on the hurling pitch and elsewhere, the two clans have coalesced in many marital arrangements.  The re-published work by John’s daughter Noreen and her family will come as a bonus to people at both sides of the river and beyond wherever natives have wandered.  John Sheehan was ‘Assistant Garda Commissioner’ in Dublin which gave him access to records before the internet made that task so easy.  Much of the data in the book is still not easily accessed, making it a ready reference to relations who held lands and worked them in times past.  The author also indicated his love of place in the many references to neighbours he evidently loved and admired and for whom this book is a monumental memory. If you missed out on the first publication, then here’s your chance to acquire it.  Looking forward to ‘The Gathering’ next year, invitees back to the Ballybrown/Clarina area will be glad to receive this in their Christmas stocking in preparation for their visit.  It is available from the late John’s daughter Noreen and her husband Des Fitzgerald of Corcamore (061 353922) or from their daughter Mary Kelly, opposite the Centra store in the village.

BANTRACHT NA TUAITHE: The recently published ICA Cookbook has been nominated at the Bord Gáis Energy Irish Book Awards 2012 in the category of Cookbook of the Year. This is a great privilege for the ICA especially as the book has been nominated among other illustrious authors including Rachel Allen and Nevin Maguire.
You can log onto www.irishbookawards.ie to vote for your favourite book in each category so PLEASE go on-line and vote for the excellent ICA Cookbook and you could win up to €50 in National Book Tokens.

CELEBRATING SESQUICENTENNIAL:  That’s ‘one and a half hundred’ or 150 years to you and me and it marks the duration of the church in Pallaskenry next year, built as it was in 1853.  As to how best mark the occasion, a public meeting will take place in the church on Tuesday November 6 at 8.00 pm, to discuss the event to take place next June.
