Kildimo Community Notes W/E December 15 2012

RECENT DEATH:  The very popular local citizen Noel Battles lost his own individual battle with the illness that had affected him for some time.  He finally breathed his last in St. Vincent’s Private Hospital Dublin on Tuesday, December 4.  His removal took place to the local church following his wake at home on Wednesday evening and his internment took place following Requiem Mass on the following day to Kilcornan cemetery.  He is survived by his wife Mary, sons Colm and John and daughter Ava, their spouses, his grandchildren , brothers, sisters ,extended family & many friends RIP.Ní imithe uainn ach imithe rómhainn.

BANTRACHT NA TUAITHE: Congratulations to Killulta ICA Painting group member Dolores Dinneen whose paintings are hanging in The Hunt Museum as part of the Limerick Art Society’s 70th Exhibition. This exhibition concludes on Wednesday December 19 and is well worth a visit.

KNOCKFIERNA RAMBLING HOUSE:  NCW is the venue for the next ‘Rambling House’ in the Desmond Complex behind the Library on Sunday December 16.  The 8.00 pm start with a host of entertainers is in honour of the late Johnny Donegan who was a regular performer at these sessions.  Entry is free, tea is provided and there’s a raffle.  The Annual Knockfierna Calendar is in the final stages of preparation with a few advertising spots left.  Contact Pat O’Donovan to secure your place in this publication at 087 9977340.

GAA LOTTO:  The new Jackpot is now €5,000 and the numbers drawn on December 4 were 6, 9, 11 & 26 which were not chosen by any punter.   As a consequence, €50 Lucky Dips of €50 were drawn by Ger McMahon, John Sheehan, Catherine Griffin and Mary O’Callaghan.

‘A CORNER OF LIMERICK’:  A very useful Christmas present for the historian in your life and there is still time to post it to interested parties away from home.  The original printing having run out, the family of the late author John Sheehan of Clarina, have reprinted this important local history of Ballybrown and its environs.  With over three hundred pages and seventeen chapters, there is a wealth of local knowledge contained therein.  Among the numerous illustrations are contained many of people and places from the locality, no longer to be found.  While the author lived in Dublin and worked as Assistant Garda Commissioner, he must have found much solace in revisiting his native parish while penning this important historical record which he bequeathed to us under the title ‘A Corner of Limerick’.  Now available again through his daughter Noreen Fitzgerald of Corcamore (061 353922) and granddaughter Mary Kelly who lives across the road from  the Centra shop in Clarina.

‘WEST LIMERICK LOCAL’:  The December issue of this useful, local and free magazine is available in the shops.  At a time when our economy needs the boost of local business support, you will find in its pages a wealth of ideas for Christmas shopping locally.  Children are catered for with a page of puzzles and games to keep them busy.  There are very helpful hints in regard to safe motoring on page six and should you be a prey to the ills of over indulgence, then page six is what you want!  Just in case you can’t get to it, then this is the receipe in advance.  ‘Prairie Oyster’ is the thing as demonstrated in James Bond films, so it must be good.  Method; Put the yolk of one egg into a glass, followed by a teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce, salt and pepper and a few dashes of Tabasco sauce.  ‘Yer only man’.

BALLYBROWN JOURNAL:  The twelfth annual journal was launched by Dr. Matt Potter on Friday December 7 at the GAA clubhouse.  As usual this annual event was greeted with enthusiasm by parishioners and visitors who eagerly collect copies for posting abroad.  The Hon Editor’s interest in local history is very evident in his many contributions and recent history is represented pictorially by the galaxy of newborns for whom copies will be safely stashed away for their embarrassment at later milestones in their lives.  The local branch of the Pioneer Abstinence Association under the presidency of Pat Gallagher is the driving force behind this journal and proceeds from sales go towards funding pilgrims to Lourdes each year.  Local shops in Clarina sell the work without profit and it can be easily spotted by the reproduction of Jim Farrell’s painting of Carrigogunnell on  the front cover.

SOCCER CLUB NEWS:  The final session of the 45 cards will take place at Slattery’s on  Monday December 17, from 9.00 pm for turkey and ham prizes.  €3 entry will guarantee an enjoyable evening.  The Annual Jim Griffin memorial match takes place as usual on St. Stephen’s Day at 12.15.  Funds from this fun event will go towards holding the annual Senior’s Party.  Players will mingle over soup and sandwiches, etc. in Slattery’s afterwards.  The final of the U8’s and U10 league will kick off from 11.15 that morning.
