GAA LOTTO:  The new Jackpot is now €5,100 and the numbers drawn on December 11 were 3, 4, 21 & 22 which were not chosen by any punter.   As a consequence, €50 Lucky Dips of €50 were drawn by Charlie McCarthy, Eamon Walsh, S & A Shanahan and Margaret O’Donoghue.

‘WEST LIMERICK LOCAL’:  The December issue of this useful, local and free magazine is available in the shops.  At a time when our economy needs the boost of local business support, you will find in its pages a wealth of ideas for Christmas shopping locally.  On page six you will find very useful hints on winter motoring.  Taking note of these may be the difference between life and death for a motorist, such as having good visibility with proper lighting and windscreen wipers.  Having a roadside emergency kit with the items included on the list, will be a valuable asset on dark nights in the event of a breakdown.  You may contact this magazine on 087 2269154 or by e-mail to westlimericklocal@eircom.net.

JIM GRIFFIN MEMORIAL MATCH:  The Jim Griffin Shield Annual Charity Soccer Match takes place this year on St. Stephens Day at the soccer pitch, with kick-off at 12.15 . As with all previous years this match is organised to raise funds to help with the cost of holding the Senior Citizens Christmas Party. This has always been well supported by both players past and present and the same is expected this year. So dig out your boots from the bottom of the wardrobe and turn out on the day even if only for a few minutes as it is for a good cause and only meant to be some fun and craic and a chance to run off and excesses you may have indulged in on Christmas day. A special “Thank You” to the Griffin Family who continue to give great support to this event every year.  This year preceding the match, the final of the U8/U10 League will take place from 11.15am so this is a great chance to see the stars of the future, present and past all on one day. Soup, sandwiches and finger food will be served in Slattery’s Bar after for any weather worn patrons or players.

BIRD WATCHING:  Join the local branch of ‘Birdwatch Ireland’  on a unique visit to an urban wetland at Westfields of the NCR on Thursday, December 27.  Meet at the adjacent Carpark at 10am and wear warm clothing and strong footwear.  Dogs are not encouraged to view resident Duck, Swan, Coot, Moorhen, Widgeon and Teal.  Binoculars are recommended or even telescopes.

CHOSEN:  As part of the fortieth anniversary of the founding of U L, forty of the brightest and best undergraduate students have been awarded scholarships worth €2,000.  Our own Sarah O’Dea has proved her worthiness to be among these bright prospects on the strength of her Leaving Cert results.  Congratulations to Sarah and her proud parents Marty and Mary who have nurtured this promising talent who takes on the daunting fields of Law and Accounting.

COMMUNITY COUNCIL:  The committee of the local council wish all parishioners a very  happy festive season.  As is obvious from its exertions, the refurbishment of the Library is nearing completion and will shortly be open for use by interested groups who will find the present status of the building fully satisfactory.  The annual calendar is being distributed free, though contributions towards its printing will be accepted.
