ANNIVERSARIES:  On Sunday January 13, the memory of the late members of the Ward family will be recalled in the noon Mass in St. Joseph’s Church,Kildimo .

TRAIL BLAZERS:  Congratulations to the local members of the Salesian College team whose successful initiative in developing an app entitled ‘Sign4Life’, has won first prize in Europe from thousands of competitors.  The five team members include Fíona Mangan from Curraheen and Caoimhe O’Neill from Ardlahan.  They are supported by Ciara Reidy, Chris O’Brien and Colleen Mullane.  It was the visit of a past pupil of the school who works in the area of Hearing Impairment, who ignited the team’s interest in bridging the gap with their app between those with hearing difficulties and the hearing population.  Of great interest to families and friends of the hearing impaired, their mobile smartphone app has lifesaving applications for those involved in rescue and ambulance services.  Their winning innovation received due honour on the Late Late Show recently and may be viewed on the RTE Player for a limited period.  The last word on the team’s achievement must go to Teresa Leahy, the Area Manager of Junior Achievement Ireland, “Throughout each stage of the competition the five students were outstanding ambassadors for their school, Limerick and Ireland and very deserving winners of the JA European Company of the Year award.  It is a fantastic achievement for Limerick and I would like to acknowledge the enterprise and hard work of all the other students from the region who took part in the competition over the last 12 months.  Special thanks to Dell for their support of Junior Achievement and for mentoring the students throughout the process.”

FREE LECTURES:  History fans of the Co Co series of lectures on the Built Heritage of Limerick, will be interested in the 6th series of lectures beginning on Tuesday January 29.  The theme of the opening talk by Dr. Matthew Stout is on ‘Limerick Ring forts’ of which there are over three and a half thousand.  The importance of preserving this important part of our heritage will be stressed by the speaker, as many of these structures continue to be targeted by developers.
Venue for all of these lectures is Limerick County Council Buildings, County Hall, Dooradoyle .
Admission is FREE.

PALLASKENRY ‘NEW CHURCH’:  As Pallaskenry church is central to the Gathering Celebrations in the vicinity later on, a news item in the ‘Limerick Chronicle’  of December 1867 will be of interest.  This is a list of contributors towards the building fund for what was then described as the ‘New Church’.  The list is headed by the highest donors and top of the benevolent list is given to Richard Russell whose second donation is noted as five pounds.  Edward Synan is next on the list with a three pound donation.  Following these are donors of one pound each of which this sample includes J.T. McSheehy, Mrs. Spillane, J. F. Walker, Mortimer O’Brien and Mrs. P.D. Bourke.  Many other donors of one pound include prominent Limerick businesses, such as Cannocks and Todds.

NEW RESOLUTION:  A life-saving practice that may be incorporated into your mobile phone contact numbers is the ‘ICE’ initiative.  This is the brainchild of a paramedic who is aware of the difficulty in contacting the relatives of victims of injury in the course of his work.  ‘ICE’ stands for ‘In case of emergency’  and under the three letters that should be included in your contact numbers, you may list those next of kin who should be contacted in case of emergency.  You can include several ‘ICE’ numbers, for example the contact number of your doctor might be helpful in accessing important medical history.

BANTRACHT NA TUAITHE: On Wednesday next January 9 the monthly guild meeting will take place in Seven Sisters Pub, Old Kildimo commencing at 8.15pm.Do come along & participate in the planning of forthcoming  activities.

GAA LOTTO:  The new Jackpot is now €5,300 and the numbers drawn on December 23 were 9, 11, 22 & 26 which were not chosen by any punter.   As a consequence, €50 Lucky Dips of €50 were drawn by Joe Gleeson, Paddy Mulvihill, Margaret Norris & Pat Meehan.

CLIONA’S FOUNDATION:  The worthy aim of this registered charity is the support of children who battle with illness and those family and friends who care for them in relation to non-medical costs.  An annual charity night is being held in Bulgaden Castle on Saturday next January 12 with a €10 single or €20 family admission.  Richard Lynch of ilovelimerick.com. will host the show which includes many celebrities and raffles for prizes including a family trip to London with theatre tickets.  More details may be had from Brendan at 087 2518949 or Debbie at 087 6547105.
