ANNIVERSARIES:  Deceased members of the Bourke family from Ballycasey will be remembered in the liturgy on Sunday, January 27 at the noon Mass. 

FREE LECTURES:  The Rathkeale and District History Society invites all to their next session on Friday January 25 at 8.30 pm in the Arts Centre- over the library. History fans of the Co Co series of lectures on the Built Heritage of Limerick will be interested in the 6^th series of lectures beginning on Tuesday January 29.  The theme of the opening talk by Dr. Matthew Stout is on ‘Limerick Ring forts’ of which there are over three and a half thousand.  The importance of preserving this important part of our heritage will be stressed by the speaker, as many of these structures continue to be targeted by developers.  The venue for this new series is changed to the County Hall in Dooradoyle and all lectures are free.

‘BOTTLE IN THE FRIDGE’:  This is the name given to an initiative promoted by ‘Muintir na Tíre’ and it is aimed at ensuring a prompt and professional response to emergencies in the home.  Look out for the little plastic green bottle in your pharmacy and all is explained in the literature that is enclosed.  Basically, the bottle is placed in your fridge will all your important medical history, your Doctor’s name and address and the names of contact persons.  It is the brainchild of an emergency worker/ambulance person, who is only too aware of the delay in diagnosis of medical emergencies when called to a house.  If you adopt this very important and free scheme, you indicate the presence of the bottle in the fridge by labels placed inside your front door and on the fridge door.  The form within the bottle has to be filled in by your GP.  This little device is sure to save lives in medical emergencies where speed in initiating treatment is vital, especially if the patient is unresponsive.  Your newest and best New Year resolution!

BANTRACHT NA TUAITHE: Members are reminded of the collection of toiletries and childrens clothes which will take place ,in aid of Adapt House Limerick at the Spring ICA Federation meeting on Wednesday February 27 in Woodlands Hotel, Adare.This annual collection is always much appreciated by the staff and volunteers who provide a haven for women and children in need.

THE GATHERING:  The Community Council are organising a meeting on this important subject on Tuesday January 29, at 8.00 pm in the Library.  A representative from the Council will be on hand to offer advice to any groups or individuals interested in promoting events during the year.  Contact Mary on 087 6521806 for further information.

BIRTHDAY:  An enjoyable celebration of Emma Griffin’s eighteenth birthday was held recently in the family hostelry ‘The Seven Sisters’ Pub, Old Kildimo. Guest of honour at the party was her Grandmother and mother of the ‘Seven Sisters’, Mary Ellen. Emma wishes to thank all her family and friends for their support in making this birthday  such a special occasion.

COMMUNITY GAMES:  Lots of activities are planned to promote personal development among members and all take place at Pallaskenry Community Centre.  The under tens and fourteens are catered for in a Talent Competition that includes recitation and singing and dancing both solo and group.  Be there for 5.00 pm on Saturday January 26.  On Sunday 27, the Art Competition takes place from 2.30 pm for five to sixteen year olds.  The challenge is to draw a picture on the supplied paper that illustrates a Community Games activity.  Bring your own drawing materials.  The Table Tennis training is proving very popular and the organiser Maeve Galvin would like to hear from people with unused tables that they might donate for  this worthy cause, on 087 2517080. 




 GAA LOTTO:  The new Jackpot is now €5,600 and the numbers drawn on January 14 were 3, 12, 13 & 24, which were not chosen by any punter.   As a consequence, €50 Lucky Dips of €50 were draw by Mary Geaney, Joanne O’Mahony, Ollie Hanley & Pat Enright. 

BIRD WATCHING:  Newcomers to the interest will be welcome to Lough Gur on Saturday January 26 at 2.00 pm in Carpark.  Apart from viewing resident and visiting water fowl, it is hoped to experience the murmuration of starlings that might take place from about 5.00 pm.  Leaders on this occasion are Geoff Hunt and Ger and Jane Griffin.  Enquiries to 087 7656439.
