BALLYSTEEN TOUR: The Kenry Historical Society and friends enjoyed a historical tour of Ballysteen under the leadership of Br. John Feheney on Sunday, May 15.  The group assembled at St. Patrick’s Church which is currently celebrating 150 years of use by the Catholic community.  It was Edwin Wyndham-Quin who made the site available from his extensive land holdings in  the area.  An older school in Ballysteen was built around the same time as the church and members of the Moran family were prominent in teaching there.  Br. John led the group to the older place of worship which is prominently sited on a hill to the east of the present church.  This earlier place of worship dates from about the 13 century and while restored in recent times, it is substantially as it was described by John O’Donovan in 1840.  Of interest to the visitors was the grave of one of the few local participants in the 1798 Rebellion, namely Michael O’Neill, who was publicly hanged from the bridge in Askeaton that same year.  The Castle and Quay site was next visited and its history explained.  One of the purposes of the original quay built by the Westropp family was the export of silver from their mine in the area.  Many members on the tour recalled their memories of those who lived in the old fishing village and the adjacent farm buildings.  Much else was recounted by Br. John of his native area from his knowledge gleaned from ancient historical records and enlivened by personal anecdotes which only a native could be aware of.  The tour concluded with many tributes paid to the tour guide.
