SCHOOL NEWS

As Oscar Wilde would say, “To secure one Green Flag was momentous, a second only marvellous, but a third- that was stupendous”.  Such were the sentiments at the celebration in the school grounds on Friday, June 18, when the school was ‘en fete’, for the raising of the Green Flag that was achieved for Water Conservation.  As is well known, as a nation we are profligate with our precious natural water.  Any student of this school would know that if your tap washer is defective and water leaks at a rate of thirty drops per minute, that this amounts to a staggering waste of over fifty gallons a month! The Flag raising ceremony was performed by  John Galvin, prominent member of the County football team.  A representative of An Taisce paid tribute to the exertions of the staff and students in all their green achievements.  Many of these were to be seen at the rear of the school buildings where potato blossoms were in evidence along with other glasraí and fruit trees, all organically produced.  The occasion was enhanced by a recall of all the school achievements over the past year, which embraced a wide variety of activities and achievements.  This presentation was very professionally presented by two senior students who in the process demonstrated that oratory is not neglected in this academy of learning.  Those who contributed to the school’s achievements were rewarded with products from their own garden and all present were entertained in the Staff Room afterwards

WEDDING

What begun as a friendship between Ann Chawke and Kay Crampton when they became neighbours on the Old Road, blossomed into a nuptial relationship between their children Seamus and Carol which was celebrated on June 18 in the Holy Trinity church Adare.  When Carol left for Ballyclough,  the  relationship strengthened over the distance with  the result that Carol will take up permanent residence in Kildimo following their honeymoon in Hawaii and the US.  The family bond is furthered strengthened by the Bride’s father Jim and his new son-in-law working for the same firm.  Fr. Joseph Noonan presided over the wedding ceremony in the historic Trinitarian Church, with Kevin Kelly and Karen O’Flynn assisting with the biblical readings.  The Bride was supported by her only sister Eimear, while John, Seamus’s brother supplied  the necessary assistance to the Groom.  Friends of the couple read the Prayers of the Faithful, namely, Kerrie Crowley, Raymond Dunne, Aisling Meehan, Tom Griffin and Claire Forde.  Tracey Fitzgerald provided the musical accompaniment throughout the liturgy.  The church event concluded with a suitable reflection, which was read by Niamh Maloney.  The wedding party were  then entertained in what was Lena Chawke’s pub nearby, provided by Uncle Charlie, before moving to the Dunraven Arms Hotel for the reception.  A very popular solo violinist provided music throughout the meal and the Groom’s Dublin cousins gave their rendition of River Dance for the  entertainment of the guests.  Kildimo hurling enthusiasts will be keeping a close eye on the their goalie and noting any changes that might follow in the aftermath of his marriage.

BIN  THERE!

The newly formed and hardworking Tidy Towns group have been instrumental in providing litter bins in the village and environs.  Given the difficulty of educating some people to use them, perhaps the general environmentally aware community might adopt the maxim to ‘Bend and Bin’, thereby benefiting the waistline and the village.  Take note also of the present floral displays of wild blooms, which are lovingly cared for by the small core of this committee.  Good on you girls!

RETIRED

Jo Hanrahan is retiring from her childminding job in favour of minding Mike who has also retired recently.  There is also the little matter of her taking up an advisory role in relation to their new grandchild.  Jo has left her good influence on numerous families and their offspring over a period of many decades, all of whom wish her well in her much deserved retirement

ART AT ‘DE BUCKET’

‘De Bucket’ is proving a popular venue for the exhibition of local talented painters and this time it’s the work of the Clarina Active Retirement  ‘Thursday Club’ members that is on show and for sale. The exhibitors are all female, giving the lie to the sexist opinion that painting is a male preserve.  Viewing is during opening hours and the wide range of the artists’ subjects and the many local and foreign scenes painted ‘en plein air’ can only impress you.

Having competed against various guilds from the city and county Kildimo ICA’s entry for Guild of the Year 2009/2010 was declared the winner.
