PERSONAL AND PASTORAL DEVELOPMENT

The autumn edition of ‘Eolas’ is available from the Limerick Diocesan Pastoral Centre in Denmark Street. All areas of development aimed at fully exploiting the personal and communal are facilitated by the numerous courses on offer. For example, under the heading of ‘Supporting Youth’, courses deal with youth sacramental development in workshops/retreats in preparation for Confirmation. Spiritual and social growth is augmented by the Diocesan Youth Pilgrimage to Lourdes, which emphasises ‘fun, faith and friendship’ for participants in the June event where youth helpers assist the less fortunate. Among the many workshops aimed at adult development is one called ‘Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Group’ which uncovers negative thinking habits and develops the person through social skills and meditation. Some of these courses are for modest fees and information may be had from 061 400133 or by e-mail: reception@ldpc.ie.

GOGGIN’S COTTAGE

An Irish Landmark Trust Ltd representative was in attendance at the late Jack Goggin’s cottage on Sunday August 29 from 2.00 to 7.00 pm. As you may have noted, the cottage has had a new thatched roof in recent times and this is as a result of the Trust’s interest in restoring significant architectural units. This is their first thatched cottage and their first restoration project in Co. Limerick. When restored the properties are offered as holiday lettings to help recoup the restoration costs for a limited period, before the properties revert to their owner, in this case Mary (Griffin) McCann. Tom Cassidy, the County Limerick Conservation Officer spoke at the cottage about the Council’s input into the project and Derek Cahill whose grandmother was born in the cottage, also outlined his knowledge of its history. The Landmark Trust is a registered charity which depends on donations from individuals and other agencies and significant funds are necessary to complete the Goggin project.

HERITAGE WEEK

The annual week to highlight our national heritage ended locally by the Kenry Historical Society’s ‘Tour of Hollypark’. Local historian Michael Costello, led off the large group which came from as far afield as Murroe,Pallasgreen ,NCW and all places in between. Michael was keen to point out the route undertaken by the De Veres and the Taylors in making their way to Sunday worship in Castletown Church of Ireland. This route necessitated going through a tunnel under the N69. This passage has been closed since the Black and Tans had it filled in by workers they commandeered from Kildimo Creamery, as they feared its use by ‘subversives’. Since the road to the west was improved, the impressive gates into Hollypark had to be rebuilt in their present position. The tour then traversed part of the old road, which predated the building of the present ‘post road’ and made their way into the rear of Hollypark. The present owners very graciously welcomed the group in the person of Sonja Heidrich, daughter of the present owner who has lived there for decades. Michael outlined the history of the area from the building of the Fitzgerald castle and the later arrival of the Taylors who built the present house on the castle site. The various owners of the house were mentioned, in particular the Keoghanes who developed an haute couture knitting industry to the rear of the house. Upwards of forty persons were employed and the participants were given first hand information in regard to that project from several members of the group who had worked there. The present owners of the house had offered their facilities for tea and cakes following the tour’s end and thanks to the generous ladies from Kilcornan Community Council, the participants sampled their tea and fancies before the Chairman of the Kenry Historical Society thanked all for their attendance and the generous hostesses for bringing the tour to such a pleasant end.

Active Retirement Ireland

A website www.activeirl was officially launched by Eamon Ryan TD, Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources last week in the new headquarters of ARI in Mary’s Abbey, Dublin.

Speaking at the launch of the new website, Minister Eamon Ryan congratulated Active Retirement Ireland on working to ensure that older people are not left behind in the digital age.

“Huge strides are being made every day with regard to the use of technology, in particular the internet,” he said. “Simple but important things – like keeping in touch with loved ones who live far away – or more practical tasks like organising finances, can now be done online. It’s great to see Active Retirement Ireland leading the way and I’m sure this new website will be a valuable resource for all their members.”

This website will provide information on events and activities for the organisation’s members, as well as up-to-date news and locations of Active Retirement Associations throughout the country.
